Robert Englund in V

Why spend your time reading press releases hopped up as features? We run the stuff through a juicer so you can get your 100% RDA of pop culture updates in less time.

  • It that should surprise no one that Kenneth Johnson is shopping a V feature film. What's new is that Latino Review has a review of the script, which sounds like a heavily condensed and slightly less interesting version of the beloved 80s series. I say beloved because, well, I might be speaking for myself--but I dug the hell out of the original miniseries and the followup. When it went to full-on series territory, it got a little too cheeseball even for me, but still: the original concept was solid. I almost feel like I'd rather see a small screen update rather than a sequel or a feature film remake; the whole Visitor reveal was effective because they really played it out before letting it rip. Also, the giant saucers have already shown up on screens, borrowed from this series by Independence Day. But what do I know? Found via io9.

  • Beetlejuice's 20th Anniversary edition hits regular DVD on September 16th (pre-order yours here) and gets Blu-Ray flavored on October 7th (pre-order yours here). Remastered and with three episodes of the animated series. My favorite line below:

  • They're making The Conversation (1974, Gene Hackman, Coppola) into a television series for AMC. Christopher McQuarrie (Usual Suspects) and Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers) are scribing. Here's the interesting bit--they've been trying to do this for about ten years: at ABC in 2006, two other places before that, and...at NBC with Kyle MacLachlan attached to star back in 1995. The story will stay the same and will be set in the 70s. Can we get a Hackman cameo? Bonus points for that. Source: Hollywood Reporter.
  • Daredevil: The Director's Cut is hitting Blu-Ray on September 30th. Do you think if the filmmakers watch it in hi-def they'll finally achieve clarity on how they screwed up the film? Yeah, me neither. You can pre-order yours here.

  • Christopher Knight, formerly Peter Brady of the original Bunch is going to host the syndicated of the new Trivial Pursuit: America Plays TV game show. It starts September 22nd. Previously there was a game show where any country could play, simply called Trivial Pursuit, hosted by Wink Martindale. It appeared on The Family Channel. Here's a taste, so you can see Wink at his most insincere:

Terrifying. Source for America Plays: Variety.

  • Jackie Chan is on board The Spy Next Door, an action comedy where he's babysitting kids and must confront secret agents after one of the kiddies gets hold of a secret code. Huh. I had no idea they were remaking The Pacifier. Source: Holllywood Reporter.
  • CSI, in a desperate but brilliantly insidious attempt to get me to watch their show, are in talks with Laurence Fishburne to take the lead after William Petersen exits, as we mentioned was coming. In an attempt to...I'm not sure what this is for, but here's the character description: "a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses." Um...okay. Each episode can start with, "Larry--kill anybody today?" Anyway, they're so desperate to get me to watch, they have as their other top choices John Malkovich and Kurt Russell. They're evil, evil bastards, I'm telling you. The producers--not Russell and Malkovich, mind you. Source: Hollywood Reporter.

Freddie Prinze Jr., thinking thoughts of wrestling

  • Bioshock is being made into a film, with a script by John Logan (Gladiator) and Gore Verbinski (Pirates) at the helm. The game's sequel, set for 2009, should come out before this film. Anybody got the script? Source.
  • Anybody got $250 million? Because here's an investment where you're sure to make it back: Ted Chapin, who runs Rodgers & Hammerstein Music Publishing, has put it up for sale for that amount. It's a helluva Buy It Now price, but it's a bargain, trust me. Source.
  • Well, at least we know why Freddie's not going to be in the new Scooby-Doo film. And not just because it's a prequel, because that would spoil any awkward humor I'm bringing to the table here. Instead he's joined the creative team for World Wrestling Entertainment, contributing behind the scenes to their programming. Which is good, because when I think wrestling, I think Freddie Prinze Jr...but only on a list of things that wrestling makes me think of where he comes 10,718th after Siamese kittens and before a wax abstract sculpture of Queen Elizabeth I. Stuff: Snoop vs. Bollywood

Other sites want to take a nugget of information you give a shit about and write 600 words about it: trouble is, that means you have about 550 words too many to have to read. We give you a barrage of news in nuggets that you can digest easily and get on with your day. You're welcome. (Granted, we don't know what goddamn day it is anymore, but that's the sacrifice we make.)

  • Snoop Dogg has a cameo in a Bollywood musical. No, honest. The film Singh is Kinng opens August 7th in India. I love this bit: "In crimson Punjabi shirt and a turban, Snoop performs the titular musical number alongside star Akshay Kumar in a segment that was lensed in Chicago. The Long Beach, Calif.-based rapper and the Bollywood actor apparently hit it off so well that they went on a 'kingly' shopping spree for the Indian garb seen in the shoot." Nice. And it worked, apparently: the soundtrack's sold 5 million copies in two weeks. I can't find their music video online but here's a sixty second taste of the movie, if you're interested. Note: Snoop does not appear in this clip. Source: Variety.

  • A thirty minute tape of The Beatles cutting up and also trying to record "I'll Follow the Sun" is going up for auction on Tuesday with an expected final price of between £8,000 and £12,000. Which I think is a very conservative estimate. And if you read up on what the tape has on it, it sounds like a proto-Nuts on the Road, just with more actual talent.
