01.24.08 by Widge @ 4:54 pm ![]() English Russia has posted an array of toys from the Soviet Union. Here's what they have to say: During the Soviet times all the toys were manufactured only on a dozen of state owned factories. All toy designs were certified with Communist Party of Soviet Union and they were lazy to certify a lot so there were not a big freedom of choice for Russian kids at that time. Now rather than go for the obvious joke of "In Soviet Russia..." I'll instead ask a very serious question... Is that the moon buggy from Moon Patrol or have I lost my mind? Categorized as: Toys

01.20.08 by Widge @ 9:17 pm ![]() I'm always impressed by people who take toys of all kinds and then do customized jobs on them. But Lego apparently has an entire movement of DIYers that do all kinds of crazy, funny, cool shit with them. Me, I'm lucky to be able to fit two of the little bricks together. So. Anyway, one of the most recent bits to catch my eye is Armothe, who created a bunch of Holy Grail minifigs, including King Arthur (pictured). You can check out his Flickr photostream here. There's no "But I'm not dead!" deluxe playset yet, but I'm sure it's coming. And yes, this is quite a bit more customized than the last Holy Grail Lego bit we posted. But with less narrative. 01.08.08 by Widge @ 10:04 pm ![]() Sillof makes craploads of custom action figures. If you go check out his website, you can see he's tackled everything from a reworking of Star Wars to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But the series he's done that I think is totally solid is the Justice League inspired by the kickass Elseworlds title, Gotham by Gaslight. That's the group picture there, but you can get better, bigger pics here. Of course, one has to go back to the Victorian era almost to find DC Comics worth reading. And now my brain is trying to create what a Victorian SuperFriends theme would be. Hmm. Would that be totally on a harpsichord or something? Categorized as: Toys

12.30.07 by Widge @ 7:31 am ![]() You've got to love it when the power of technology can make a man's youthful dreams into a reason that normal people fear him and geeks like us admire him as an adult. Case in point: Kirk Demarais. Why? Because he had a dream...about Weebles. Throughout childhood I dictated a number of letters to Romper Room regarding my thoughts on new and better Weeble products. My mom recorded these ideas and actually mailed them in. My list included: the cast of Peter Pan, Casper, Sesame Street (which were eventually made), Popeye, Mickey Mouse (which were also produced later on) Scooby-Doo, Land of the Lost, Mighty Mouse, Groovie Goolies, and Star Wars. So using Photoshop, he's created his own fantasy line of Would-Be Weebles. In addition to Tron (shown here), there's also The Stretch Monster, Steve Martin and Mazinga. I'd take a resurgence of Weebles over this plague of satanic Bobbleheads we're in the middle of any day of the week. Categorized as: Toys

12.14.07 by Widge @ 6:01 pm ![]() Dindrane would be the expert on this, but if I understand it correctly, we're dealing with a definitely chibi Cthulhu here. He draws you in and then devours your soul. Indeed: look at the vapid expression and huge hollow eyes of the girl who has brought his Great Evil into your presence. Witness how she has tiny little Cthulhus on either side of her head, like something inspired by Starro. Which madness-bringing bundle of cute reigns supreme? Is it this? Or is it John Kovalic's entry into the running? Categorized as: Toys
