The Magic 8 Ball... Dissected!
Posted on 05.07.07 by Widge @ 3:41 am

It's just the way of the world. As time passes, even the most cherished bits of magic and speculation are replaced by the icy cold stare of science's headlight. We once thought the Earth was the center of the universe. Scratch that. We once thought that Mars was covered in whacked out Edgar Rice Burroughsian life. Forget it. We once thought that all you need is love. Nope--you have to have caffeine, too.

And now, another one bites the dust. Hanttula has taken the oracle by which many people (including Congress, it seems) lived their lives, and put it under the knife.

Not for the faint of heart, I assure you. Found via Digg.

Phillipe Starck's TeddyBearBand: The Swiss Army Toy
Posted on 05.03.07 by Widge @ 3:46 pm

Phillipe Starck gives an interesting explanation for this strange mutant plush beast (you have to dig to find it...look under "Goods"):

A surreal toy, TeddyBearBand stimulates the imagination, considerabily more than any mere plush bear. It removes love and friendship from the realm of disposable emotions.

Which is all well and good for a designer to say, but here's what the disposable emotions are replaced with:

Kid: Mommy, Teddy can't walk.

Mom: Why's that, honey?

Kid: (bursts into tears) Because when he does he steps on Bunny!

You know it's true. You know it, so don't deny it. But that's what happens when you give a kid something that looks like Anton Arcane was made CEO of Gund.

The Cycle of Plush Toy Life: Nasty, Brutish, But Soft
Posted on 04.30.07 by Widge @ 11:29 pm

Softies Central posts a side of plush toy life that Ty or Gund or any number of other plush animal creators don't want you to see: and that's plush toys that eat other plush toys. Yes, they seem to conveniently leave that off of the Discovery Channel, don't they? Just remember the pics when you look up and see your happy toys sitting on the shelf. Some are plush predators, but some are plush prey.

Monarch Action Figure: But You Can't Buy Him for a Cigarette
Posted on 04.22.07 by Widge @ 6:31 pm
Venture Bros. Monarch action figure

Somebody made a one-of-a-kind Monarch action figure, straight from the Venture Bros. It's for sale on eBay. And you know what? As action figures go, it's pretty damn cool. And if his nose isn't pointy enough for you, the seller has offered to resculpt it. Now that's customer service, people.

Let's see...as I write this, it's at $61.

I don't know what's wrong with people. It's obvious there's no market out there for Venture Bros. action figures. Because I'm sure if there was, Cartoon Network would have done something about it by now. Yup. So you're all delusional. Get with the program.

Mattel Musical Toys: Don't Buy the Toys That Make the Noise
Posted on 04.20.07 by Widge @ 6:00 am

Saturday Morning Blog points us to this 1955 commercial for Mattel jack-in-the-boxes and guitars.

Watching this reminds me of that old saying, "If thine enemy offends thee, buy each of his children a drum."
