RIP: Larry Harmon
Posted on 07.06.08 by Widge @ 3:18 am

Larry Harmon, the man responsible for most of us knowing who Bozo the Clown is--and who owned the Bozo franchise--died earlier this week. And in tribute, here's a couple of Bozo clips I found online.

I never knew before how the whole Bozo thing worked--I'll let you read the Wikipedia article for the full skinnee--but Pinto Colvig, the original voice of Goofy, was the first Bozo. Harmon was a Bozo, then bought the rights to Bozo. Then he licensed the rights to local television stations to have their own actors play Bozo, the most popular of which was Bob Bell on WGN in Chicago. More on him in a moment.

Could not find any footage online of Larry as Bozo, but somebody posted this appearance of the character on What's My Line? in 1969 and it seemed fitting to share. According to Wikipedia, the actor, Gordon Ramsey, who played Bozo for WOR in New York, then appeared later on the show as himself as another mystery guest. I wish I could find that segment to couple with this.

Happy Birthday, Jennifer Saunders
Posted on 07.06.08 by Widge @ 1:40 am

One of my favorite bits from French & Saunders, they smack around Lord of the Rings in the same fashion they did Harry Potter.

And just for the record, I've seen online birthdates for her from July 5th to July 12th, though most of them say today. So if for some reason we're a day late or a trifle early, so be it. A bit of Edina after the break.

Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Kubrick Season!
Posted on 07.05.08 by Widge @ 3:37 am

Channel 4 has recreated the set of Kubrick's The Shining for a tracking shot that winds up being, in some aspects, scarier than the film it's based upon. This to promote their "Kubrick Season," in which they're showing ten films starting July 15th.

Ginger Rogers, Mystery Guest
Posted on 07.01.08 by Widge @ 9:43 pm

The most excellent Ginger Rogers on What's My Line? from 1954. Most celebrities, as we've seen, disguise their voices. But Ginger went a bit extreme.

Welcome Back Carlin
Posted on 06.29.08 by Widge @ 8:52 pm

I know we've got a lot of George Carlin these days, but I don't think we're offending anybody. Except Fred Phelps. And we know he can't actually read, so it's all good. Here's Carlin's guest appearance from Welcome Back Kotter from February 17, 1977. This is off the second season, which is not available on DVD yet.

And a quick note: I know the episode looks like it's turning into a lobster bucket, but relax, that's all good too.
