Bulletin from the Ministry of Naughty Bits: The Midnight Blue Collection
Posted on 10.22.06 by ScottC @ 11:33 pm

Released by: Blue Underground.

As your Minister of Naughty Bits, I wanted to bring to your attention that the Ministry will be issuing bulletins to keep the public advised of media that deals with the sexy. Because it's all about the sexy. This is all for your health, so grin and bear it.

In this Bulletin, we go old-school. Al Goldstein was the king of New York smut with his "magazine," Screw, which covered the New York sexual underground. Goldstein saw the growth of cable in the 70s and wanted to expand his empire with a video version of his magazine. So began Midnight Blue, a public access cable show that for almost twenty years pushed the boundaries of good taste and sexual conformity. Blue Underground has been releasing DVDs collections of the "best" of the show. Volume 4 of this series, Freaks & Geeks, features segments of some seriously fucked up shit from a cathouse for dogs to sex cults with hermaphroditic priests/priestesses to the first public sex marathon since the days of the Roman empress, Messilina. The disc comes with "Filthy Facts" subtitles that offer informative and snarky context to the smutty segments. It brings whole new meaning to "Pop-Up Video". (Buy it)

Sloshing through the swamp of pop culture so you don't have to. We bring you ideas for how to waste your weekend. Sorry for the tardiness on this one. We're having big fun now.

Download the podcast here.

Of course, special thanks go out to Clutch for letting me use their absolutely badass song, "Promoter (of earthbound causes)" as my theme music for this.

Buy Blast Tyrant, which is where you can find "Promoter". Buy their latest album, Pitchforks and Lost Needles. Send them love and coin.

Thanks also to Katy Bowser for letting us feature her album and play a track. Find her at her website here or on MySpace here.

And thanks to James Underberg for putting his song "The Battle" out on PodSafe Audio so we could use it for the opening bit.

BTW, you iTunes subscriber types can nab this feed here.

Or if you want to do something else with it, the feed feed is here.

Rob Zombie + Ed Wood = Excellent Double Feature
Posted on 10.06.06 by Widge @ 10:17 pm

Rob Zombie

Next Friday, it sounds like there's a treat on Turner Classic Movies. Ed Wood, one of the greatest Adverse Video directors of all time, is getting a double feature of Plan 9 From Outer Space and Bride of the Monster, both starring Bela Lugosi. The host is Rob Zombie. If you haven't seen the films, you should definitely tune in. They are a hoot and a half. I'm just fascinated to hear Zombie's take on them both. Get more info here.

And hey, Rob: nice shirt, dude.

Roz of Spaz-House, birthday girl, gave us the news.

Victory at Sea (1952) - DVD Review
Posted on 09.15.06 by HTQ4 @ 5:45 am
Victory at Sea DVD cover art

Film:
DVD:

Directed by M. Clay Adams
Narrated by Leonard Graves

Released by: A&E/The History Channel.
Rating: NR (some of the combat footage may be too much for little kiddos)
Region: 1
Anamorphic: N/A; appears in its original 1.33:1 format.

My Advice: War buffs should own.

Seven years after the end of World War II, someone at NBC thought it would be a good idea to get some of the footage that was taken during the war that had never been seen by the American public, edit it for television, and present it. This was unprecedented. Clocking in at twenty-six one-hour half-hour episodes, this documentary completely changed America's outlook on the War. For the first time, they were shown American soldiers and sailors in the line of fire and, in some cases, being wounded or killed. It is for this reason that I put the warning on the ratings above that some of the images of dead bodies may be too much for younger audiences. When you add in the fact that the score was written by Tony and Academy Award winning composer Richard Rodgers and that it was narrated by Leonard Graves, this series couldn't lose. (Editor's Note: Please see Paul's helpful correction below regarding the credit on the musical scoring for both Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett.)
