Magnum P.I.: The Complete First Season DVD cover art

Film:
DVD:

Created by: Donald P. Bellisario & Glen A. Larson
Starring: Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley, Larry Manetti

Features:

  • All eighteen first season episodes
  • Four bonus episodes from later seasons

Released by: Universal
Region: 1
Rating: NR
Anamorphic: N/A; appears in its original 1.33:1 format

My Advice: Fans should own.

Thomas Magnum (Selleck) is a former Naval Intelligence officer and Vietnam vet who's realized that he gave his youth to the military and now is trying to make up for lost time. He becomes a private investigator in Hawaii where he hangs out at a millionaire's pad, gets ferried out of danger by his chopper pilot buddy T.C. (Mosley), and is backed up in his endeavors by club owner Rick (Manetti). The only thing he has to deal with is occasionally getting shot, and of course, the strict Higgins (Hillerman), the manager of the place where he's got room and board. So it's the Hawaii life with sports cars, cases, and the occasional gorgeous woman that needs smooching.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Premiere Episode (1999) - DVD Review
Posted on 07.07.03 by Widge @ 11:59 pm

Film:
DVD:

Created & Written by Dick Wolf
Directed by Jean DeSegonzac
Starring Chris Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, Dann Florek, Richard Belzer, Dean Winters

Features:

  • Pilot episode for the original Law and Order series
  • Law and Order making of featurette
  • SVU: The Beginning featurette
  • Set walkthrough with actor Florek

Released by Universal
Rating: NR, although bear in mind it's an intense show: I wouldn't show it to an 8-year-old for example
Region: 1
Anamorphic: N/A; appears in its original 1.33:1 format

My Advice: Wait for the boxed set. Or turn on the TV.

If you are truly the scum of the earth, i.e. you sexually or physically abuse kids or rape women, then your crime will more than likely fall into the hands of the Special Victims Unit, known internally as the "Sex Crimes" squad. Hopefully they will barbeque your ass, but that's another issue entirely. This is a volunteer unit, and the people involved have to deal with some extremely heinous shit day in and day out. Take, for example, a cab driver whose cab has apparently plowed into a pole. He's found with thirty-some-odd stab wounds in his body--and he happens to be missing his member, if you get my drift. When the investigation begins, Detectives Stabler and Benson (Meloni & Harigtay) quickly realize there's a helluva lot more going on than meets the eye.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent: The Premiere Episode (2001) - DVD Review
Posted on 06.27.03 by Widge @ 12:38 am

Film:
DVD:

Created by Dick Wolf
Written by Rene Balcer, based on a story by Dick Wolf
Directed by Jean DeSegonzac
Starring Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Jamey Sheridan, Courtney B. Vance, Jake Weber

Features:

  • Pilot episode for the original Law and Order series
  • Law and Order making of featurette
  • Criminal Intent: The Beginning featurette

Released by: Universal.
Rating: NR.
Region: 1
Anamorphic: N/A; appears in its original 1.33:1 format.

My Advice: Wait for the boxed set. Or turn on the TV.

If you do something not just bad, but downright naughty, expect to meet the folks at New York City's Major Case Squad. Bad enough is Detective Alexandra James (Erbe), who's disarmingly tough and won't tolerate a lot of bullshit. But you're screwed if you run into Detective Robert Goren (D'Onofrio). He's pretty much every detective you've ever read about rolled into one big package. Very little gets past him, which is a good thing--because in this first little adventure of theirs, a guy named Carl Atwood (Weber) has decided to do a little creative breaking and entering...and waltz away with millions in diamonds. And for the icing on the cake, he's left some corpses behind him.

Law and Order: The First Year (1990) - DVD Review
Posted on 03.19.03 by Widge @ 12:53 am

Film:
DVD:

Created by Dick Wolf
Starring George Dzundza, Michael Moriarty, Chris Noth, Richard Brooks, Dann Florek, Steven Hill

Features:

  • The Creation of Law and Order with creator Wolf
  • Law and Order: Dead on the Money game trailer
  • All twenty-two first season episodes

Released by: Universal
Rating: NR
Region: 1
Anamorphic: N/A; episodes appear in their original 1.33:1 format

My Advice: A must-own for the fan.

It goes like this: there's a criminal justice system, see? And there's two sides to what goes on within it, two groups of people who are working to keep your ass from getting robbed or killed. You have the police who catch the bad guys and then the district attorney's office who prosecute the bad guy. Of course, in real life, the bad guy goes to prison, has better cable, living arrangements and access to education than most college students in this country, and can usually get off early especially if the perp has done something as harmless as rape or aggravated assault. But I digress.
