My Verdict: Nice.

It amuses me to no end that the two best Spidey books on the market today are Ulty Spidey and this anthology series, which focuses on slightly askew tales of Spidey--i.e., ones that are actually interesting. After some rather kickass story arcs, this one-shot takes a bit of an interesting turn. Two brothers, the older one now the "man of the house" and his younger brother, the typical put-upon smaller sibling, are enjoying (well, arguing about, really) an episode of the animated series Insectman when who should explode through their wall but Spider-Man? That's not something that happens everyday--at least not to most kids.

I'm not familiar with Andrews' works prior to this issue, but I gotta admit it's very interesting stuff. Strangely pseudo-photorealistic faces...it almost seems like somebody painted Strangehaven, to be honest. And this is a good thing. The action takes place almost completely in a darkened room, and Andrews makes some kickass use of lighting. He makes interesting choices as well. This is probably the only Spidey issue you'll ever read in which you never get a complete shot of Spidey. The most you'll get is an action shot from behind. Faascinating.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this title; my understanding is it's the bottom of the Spidey heap when it comes to sales. But again, at least somebody's doing something different with the mythos. Worthy.
