Weekly Recommendations...from Needcoffee.com

Each Thursday, Needcoffee.com's staff of whackos will wrack our brains to give you interesting and new things to do over the weekend. Books, movies, whatever. We'll throw them out, you do with them what you will. And hey...if you have something you want to recommend--whatever it is--drop us a line.

Incidentally, we've provided links where we can for you to buy the stuff or find out more if you're interested, courtesy of those Amazon types. Hey, come on, we can't be totally selfless in this, can we?

Book of the Week: Principia Discordia by Malaclypse the Younger. For those who haven't read the book or those who need a refresher, this weekend's your chance. Ranking up there with Sun Tzu and Dr. Seuss for authors that you simply must read in order to change your perspective on life, this guide to Discordianism will set you straight. Or crooked. It's all relative. Buy it, or just read the bloody thing online here.

Graphic Novel of the Week: Elektra: Assassin by Miller & Sienkiewicz. Sure, she's got a series again. Sure, she's going to be in that Daredevil movie, whenever that happens. But for us, this is the definitive Elektra. With kickass whacked out artwork by Sienkiewicz, the sexy deadly one involves a cybernetic government agent in a fight against The Beast. Or...she could just be a loony.

DVD of the Week: Memento. Despite being well distributed for a new distribution company, a lot of people in the provinces never had a chance to check this bad boy out. It is probably the best mindf*&k you will encounter this year. You know the drill--Guy Pearce plays a gentleman whose wife was killed and who also has no short term memory. The film that proves you really need to know who's who in a chase.

Off the Beaten Path Rental of the Week: A Midwinter's Tale. Out of print, not on DVD. Again. Kenneth Branagh's black and white "companion piece" almost, to his ginormous Hamlet. It features a young actor having a mid-life crisis who decides to pull together a group of misfits and peform this lovely play for Christmas...you might have heard of the play...Hamlet. Just hilarious, even moreso if you're a former thespian type.

CD of the Week: Arizona Bay by Bill Hicks. My personal favorite of what Bill Hicks material there is available on CD, it contains some classic bits including his comparisons between Kennedy and Christ, his take on the L.A. Riots, and the prospect of dinosaurs...and why they weren't in the Bible.

Beverage of the Week: Oregon Chai's Chai Charger. Ahhhhh, chai. It has gotten us through many a long sleepless weekend of writing and updating the site. We love chai. And our favorite chai to date is Oregon Chai. And our favorite Oregon Chai, you guessed it--is the kind with guarana, black tea and caffeine. Yup. Best with soy milk.

Ice Cream of the Week: Tiramisu by Edy's Dreamery. If you can't have Festivus, then this ice cream is your next best bet. Tasting just like the dessert of its namesake--complete with that sweet coffee like taste, natch--it's worth the price of admission, not to mention the extra laps at the track to burn off the results.
