Weekly Recommendations...from Needcoffee.com

Each Thursday (or Friday, since some weeks we seem to be running behind on everything), Needcoffee.com's staff of whackos will wrack our brains to give you interesting and new things to do over the weekend. Books, movies, whatever. We'll throw them out, you do with them what you will. And hey...if you have something you want to recommend--whatever it is--drop us a line.

Incidentally, we've provided links where we can for you to buy the stuff or find out more if you're interested, courtesy of those Amazon types. Hey, come on, we can't be totally selfless in this, can we?

Book of the Week: Shiny Adidas Tracksuits and the Death of Camp by the Editors of Might. Goddammit, I miss Might Magazine. Sure, all the whackos involved have gone on and done other things--but it just can't compare with such stories as Genghis Khan being selected as "Man of the Millennium" or the expose on marriage and why people still seem to fall for it. I still have a sticker up on my fridge: "Sometimes I read Might Magazine. I'm sorry, God." This was sheer unadultered twisted brilliance and now its essays are in a book. Go buy it already.

Comic Book of the Week: Stormwatch: Team Achilles #5 by Micah Ian Wright & Whilce Portacio. Oh man, it's evil. It's blistering and caustic and I love it. If you miss the sheer brutality of The Authority, then I can't imagine why you're not picking up this book. And not just because the aforementioned supergroup goes up against Stormwatch in this ish, but because you also see the most imaginative uses for a giant-sized character you've probably ever seen. Double carnage. I love it.

Graphic Novel of the Week: Crux, Vol. 1: Atlantis Rising by Mark Waid, Steve Epting & Paul Pelletier. Okay, you ready for this? The denizens of Atlantis are split: some want to make a transition to a higher realm while others want to hang out and take care of the upcoming human race. The latter group go into statis, only to wake up one hundred millennia later. They find humanity's gone, the planet's been turned into a cosmic amusement park, and--oh, by the way, it's being invaded. With a whacked premise like that, you know it's gotta be good. And Waid and company deliver.

DVD of the Week: Down By Law. Hmmm, musicians John Lurie and (God Among Men) Tom Waits meet Roberto Benigni in a Louisiana jail and begin to formulate a plan for escape. Go ahead and read that sentence again if you feel you must, but it will still be there, I assure you. It's a very odd film that has achieved a definite oddball status...and with good reason. And the fact that it's Criterion only underscores the fact that it's quality.

CD of the Week: One Minute Science by Sunna. Originally picked this up because they were on a label of Massive Attack goodness, but it turns out their hard progressive style is a bit different than Tricky's former band. Balancing crunch and noise with interesting lyrics and sweet vocals, you get a little bit of everything on this release of theirs. Key tracks to check out: "Power Struggle" and "Forlorn."

Snack of the Week: Grand Light Gingerbread Man Ice Cream by Edys. Okay. We're not generally fans of things that are light, you understand. We want things to be balls to the wall extreme. But we gotta admit, this seasonal tub of goodness is pretty choice. Maybe it's the ginormous chunks of gingerbread that drive it home. Who knows? We just know that it gets inhaled fairly quickly.
