Con Air (1997)

Directed by Simon West
Written by Scott Rosenberg
Starring John Malkovich, Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi

My Advice: Wait for MST3K.

The most disappointing film of 1997, in my opinion, because it had such potential.  Jerry Bruckheimer, who gave us the very enjoyable The Rock, hands Simon West the reins and he drives this carriage, which is chock full of great actors, straight over the cliff.  It's our hope here at Needcoffee.com that West doesn't get to drive anymore.  The actors can be seen struggling with a really bad script and many of them are smart enough to look embarrassed.  Only Buscemi gets high marks for his two-steps-above-cameo as a Hannibal Lecter ripoff.  He also has the only good lines in the film, bunny notwithstanding.  Cusack was a much better action guy in Grosse Pointe Blank, Malkovich is completely wasted, and the plot makes the improbable end of Cruise's Mission: Impossible look hyperreal.  We can only hope that Bruckheimer can redeem himself with Armageddon this summer.  Sigh.
