Wayhomer Review #181: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Jennifer Lawrence from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Note: This episode is taken from the archives and was recorded before A) Widge’s computer blew up and 2) Widge’s car’s transmission died. It’s been fun.

It’s Episode #181 for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, in which our protagonist discusses franchise creep, a cast that’s doing the best they can with the material they’ve been given and a film that feels like its two and a half pod races too long.

The Hunger Games – 27 Second Review

    Katniss Hunger Games Poster

    Directed by: Gary Ross
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth Banks

Review: First off, no one is happier than me that child gladiatorial combat has become as popular as it is with this movie. But if you’re going to go that route, why are you going to spend half your movie on dream sequences about bread instead of child-on-child brutality? And why is it okay for a movie to pit children against each other, but when I do it with the preschool class at that church on the corner, it’s “an atrocity”? Mine turned out better than the movie, dammit.

    The Eagle (2011) – 27 Second Review

Review: As much as I enjoy Roman-style bloodshed, this one bored me. When the face-stabbing and limb-hacking was actually on screen, it was quite enjoyable. But those few and far between sequences were interluded with far too many sitting-around-a-fire and riding-horses-through-the-flowing-hills sequences. And the ending was far too much like a buddy cop movie. Now I want to see an actual buddy cop movie set in ancient Rome.

32 Days of Halloween IV, Day 30: Trailers of the Living Dead!

Christopher Lee in Castle of the Living Dead

Today has been traditionally a day we kick off with zombie goodness. And most recently, it’s been trailers.

So okay, admittedly, there’s no zombies in this (snippet?/Japanese trailer?) for the 1964 Italian flick, Castle of the Living Dead. Not even any version of the wide-eyed hypnotized zombies that came before Romero. No, instead it’s just the taxidermy of Psycho taken to a crazed extent. And it’s sort of hard to get anything out of this…whatever this is, but it does have Christopher Lee and Donald Sutherland in what I believe is his first major role in a feature film. So you have to give respect to that.

    2012 Film Actually a Remake

Our amigo Kebe pointed this out: Roland Emmerich is apparently not the first person to try and beat Irwin Allen at his own game. Long ago, there was a disaster movie classic that Emmerich appears to be trying to remake. Seriously, it’s almost a shot for shot deal except for now we have better FX and no Donald Sutherland.

The resemblance is downright eerie, don’t you think? I’m not usually a fan of litigation, but if John Landis, Jim Abrahams and the Brothers Zucker decided to sue, I’d laugh my ass off.

32 Days of Halloween II, Movie Night No. 14: Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors

Peter Cushing from Dr. Terror's House of Horrors

This film boasts an excellent Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, a young Donald Sutherland, and–as a long distance dedication to Rox–a wicked cool Peter Cushing as “Dr. Terror!” Yes!

Last year on this fourteenth night of our festival, we were watching the original House of Wax!
