The Sound Board #13: The Great Podcast in the Sky

This podcast generally covers music and other transgressions. This episode is hosted by Widgett Walls with tremendous support from Dr. J.M. Tuffley and Prof. Rob Levy.

This episode’s central topic is twofold. One: death. The death of musicians. The 27 Club. What certain musicians would be doing today if they were still around. What certain musicians are worth, even dead. Elvis. John Lennon. And more. Also: Halloween. Our picks for great Halloween albums.

Special thanks to Hyperbubble for our lead-in music. Show them love and buy their stuff.

Headsup: You can find the music we discuss at our Amazon Store.

Headsup: Cinematic Titanic Brings the Fu and More…

There’s a lot of stuff that materializes in the world. Some of it is your friend. Some of it is cool. But how much of it is worth buying? And for whom? We attempt to help you unravel the mysteries. And anything you purchase through our Amazon links here give us kickbacks, so we thank you advance.

Robot Chicken Season 4 DVD cover art

So East Meets Watts was the first of the two live shows that Cinematic Titanic performed here in Atlanta. And my understanding is that they hit us early in their run, so they had plenty of time to polish it before recording their life performance for this DVD. And even better than the Titanic team going after the film, it does a good job of capturing the live performance: whereas on the “normal” Titanic DVDs you get the silhouettes, here you get to see facial expressions and reactions. So it really is the next best thing to actually being there. While we highly recommend you go catch them live, this will do in a pinch. Go snag it from their official store.

Win From Elvis In Memphis on CD!

From Elvis in Memphis CD cover art

It’s time for a 40th Anniversary release of Elvis‘ American Studios Sessions, out from Sony. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

Elvis Presley’s Memphis sessions proved that sometimes you can go home again. It was January 1969, and Elvis had not recorded in his hometown since leaving Sun Records for RCA in 1955. But the renewed focus and ambition sparked by his wildly successful TV comeback special the previous month propelled him back into a Memphis studio, where in just two weeks of sessions he made some of the most memorable and artistically satisfying music of his career.

This burst of inspired creativity resulted in the critically acclaimed album From Elvis In Memphis and its companion Back In Memphis. “Suspicious Minds,” “In The Ghetto,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain” were among the unforgettable hits that resulted. This 40th anniversary Legacy Edition contains every track from the sessions recorded at American Studios in Memphis in January and February of 1969.

Sony has sent over a copy that we can give away. Want to win it? Of course you do: it’s freaking Elvis. Enter using the form below and enter once a day. If we draw your name when the contest ends, you snag it. Good luck.

Win Some New Christmas Music!

Yo-Ya Ma and Friends: Songs of Joy and Peace cover art
Kristin Chenoweth: Lovely Way to Spend Christmas cover art Elvis Presley: Christmas Duets cover art

Okay, so most Christmas music is not new. Admittedly. But if you’re tired of listening to the same old stuff at Christmas, then I would suggest you try to win these:

Yo-Yo Ma is good, not just because he plays a stringed instrument–which I admit I have a weakness for–but he also brings the likes of Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck, James Taylor, Alison Krauss along for the ride.

Kristin Chenoweth is good, because she’s got a great voice and because she stars on Pushing Daisies, which I mention again in the hopes that more people will buy the DVD of the first series so they’ll keep it on the air.

And Elvis…well, he is Elvis after all (who didn’t do no drugs). And here they’ve got him singing newly created duets with Wynonna Judd, Amy Grant, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John and others.

We’ve got a copy of all three CDs here and they’re yours to win. How do you win? You enter once a day, using the form below. And we draw a name from the entries–that person wins. It’s much easier than listening to the same old Christmas mix and finally snapping and trying to garrote a relative with some Xmas lights. Okay, maybe not for Siege. But for most of us.
