Plea for Sanity: STOP the Tinkering

There is a plague, albeit of the First World variety, that has spread online through our technology…and it simply has to stop. I’m talking about the Tinkering.

By Tinkering, I mean screwing around with something that’s working perfectly well until you’ve basically ruined it. I mean not leaving well enough alone. Remember when Pinterest was, you know, a good place to pin and share images? Now anytime the iPhone app is anywhere near functional, I won’t update it for months. Like the very handy “You’ve just switched to the app with a URL in the clipboard, would you like to pin it?” feature, which works now about 7% of the time.

Yet Another Article About Why iOS 7 is Rubbish. Sorry.

Donald Duck Applecore

Note: Before I begin, I’d like to state for the record that I understand that no one has died, no one is on fire and no one is trapped in a car that is rapidly sinking into a lake. I am about to rant about a smartphone, which is the epitome of a “First World Problem.” There are many other problems in the world that are a bigger priority than this one. In fact, most of them are bigger. However, this is a pop culture site that considered The Last Airbender a war crime. So perspective is something we are well aware of yet choose to brush aside for entertainment purposes. You know that, I know that, and so…let’s begin.

It is well documented on this site and on podcasts that my previous phone was a Samsung Captivate running Android. I have a personal rule. Understanding that I would be, if left to my own devices (no pun intended), one of those people who buys every single new and shiny device that came out, my rule is that I can’t buy the next X until the current X dies. So I am very careful about what device I buy, knowing that I am stuck with it for a while.

    Remembering Steve Jobs

    Steve Jobs

Yesterday my brother commented on the awesomeness of an app for the new iPhone 4S that gives you timed (and vocal) reminders based on your GPS location. Beside me as I type is my iPod filled with more music than I ever could have imagined could fit in a few square inches…and on my shelf are Pixar films that still make me laugh/cry every time I watch them. Those who worked alongside the man behind all of these things describe his philosophy as “make it great,” and that he did, in so many ways. Shortly after that conversation with my brother, I learned we have to bid goodbye to Steve Jobs, a brilliant inventor, a savvy entrepreneur, and an amazing man…and I for one, could not say goodbye before pausing to honor “the man behind the curtain.”
