32 Days of Halloween VII: The New Blood Begins Here!

Abandoned New Orleans Amusement Park

Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in. That’s right, you can’t keep a good celebration of the best holiday in the universe down. Thus we return with Year 7 of 32 Days of Halloween, aka The New Blood, aka you can expect some chick with telekinesis to show up and fight us. Fine. This year it’s one daily post to rule you all and in the darkness bind you. So enjoy. Because we alternate between Warner Brothers and Disney, we veer back over to the Looney Tunes side of the house to bring you the Chuck Jones action of 1955’s Jumpin’ Jupiter.

Incidentally, that badass image up top is from an abandoned amusement park in New Orleans, found via Sophia’s Motion Burns the Mood Tumblr. (There’s an entire set there.) When you look at it, just in your mind’s ear, hear the Cyclone pinball saying “Welcome to my house.” It adds something.

32 Days of Halloween VI: 32 Days Lives – It Begins Here

    Jeepers Creepers

As I type this, a full moon (or close enough) is high in the night sky outside. Once more, you did not heed the warnings. You read the Latin off the back of the cereal box. Or you pulled the stake out of the skeletal remains in the clothes hamper downstairs. Or you reconnected the battery in that haunted Buick you keep in the garage. Whatever it was, you did it all right. So what is about to transpire is entirely your fault. Yes, I’m talking to you.

Because Halloween-time is on the move again, and it claims September 30th for its very own–31 Days is not enough for us to celebrate the mayhem. Thus, 32 Days of Halloween, Part VI: 32 Days Lives begins here. Quake in your boots. And if you own no boots, rent some boots. Then quake in them.

Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Ultimate Collectors Edition Blu-Ray Vol. 1

We hear it all the time. In fact…because we’re old, we say it often: “They just don’t make them like that anymore.” And if you ever needed an example, all you have to do is check out the contents of The Looney Tunes Platinum Collection, Vol. 1. Because, honestly, whatever magic they were able to bottle back in the day when these were created (Wednesday), they ran out of their supply. Warner Brothers still has the characters but has never been able to recreate the frantic awesomeness that were these original cartoons. We shan’t rehash the many theories as to why, because they have been covered better and elsewhere, I have no doubt. What we will do is get the usual rant out of the way before we talk about how pleased we are. Rant begins.

13 Days of Xmas 2010 – Day 3: Even More Fun With Cartoons

    Santa Wile E. Coyote

Day 3 of 13 Days of Xmas has been about cartoons. In 2009, we had the original Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer plus Donald Duck. In 2008, we enjoyed the company of Pluto, Tom and Jerry and Max Fleischer. And in Year One we were enjoying the company of The Grinch.

This year we kick off with a wintry Chuck Jones cartoon starring Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner from 1979: “Freeze Frame.”

And then we go back for another original: the original Frosty the Snowman from 1953. I must warn you: I find it utterly exhausting. It reminds me of the title of the collection of R. Crumb’s letters: Your Vigor For Life Appalls Me. If you think the style is familiar, yes, that’s UPA: the people that brought you “Gerald McBoing Boing.” But regardless: enjoy!

32 Days of Halloween IV: The Final Chapter Starts Here!

    Bugs Bunny: Bewitched Bunny

You thought you had buried it. Perhaps far from the crossroads. Perhaps with a stake in its heart and a mouth filled with garlic. With maybe some wolfsbane and silver for good measure. But no. You can’t keep a good franchise down (and in a lot of cases, a bad one is even harder to take out). Halloween returns and, unsatisfied with merely owning the month of October, it has invaded and claimed September 30th as its own. Thus: 32 Days of Halloween IV: The Final Chapter.

That’s right, we’ve done four years of this nonsense. No, we can’t believe it either.

Year one, we began the proceedings with Mickey. We brought you more Mickey in year three. But on even years, it’s time for Looney Tunes. We did Bugs Bunny our second year, and now it’s back to Bugs and the first appearance of Witch Hazel in “Bewitched Bunny.”

    Halloween Day 14: Broom-Stick Bunny

    Broomstick Bunny

So Day 14 has generally been up for grabs. Last year we watched the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. Which, seriously, if you haven’t seen, you need to. No lie. And when you’re done with that–I started to look for other Halloween specials. And there’s Bugs Bunny in that list, yes, but if you’re going to watch what’s ostensibly a Halloween clip show, you might as well just watch a cartoon instead. So here’s “Broom-Stick Bunny” from 1956. It’s Bugs, it’s Mel Blanc, it’s Chuck Jones. What more do you need? Oh, well, June Foray as the witch–you need that too, naturally.

    Direct link for the feedreaders.

This short is available on Volume 2 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, fully restored and looking amazing. I strongly recommend you pick it up if you haven’t already.

And for more goodness, we checked out the original Frankenstein trailer two years back.
