32 Days of Halloween VII, Day 3: The Old Man in the Cave & Death Ship

Death Ship: Twilight Zone

Day 3’s feature presentation has normally been The Twilight Zone as a twofer, but we’ll get to that in a moment. The first bit of audio we have for you today is an outtake from Michael Jackson and Vincent Price’s studio time for “Thriller.” It’s obvious they were able to trim the truly cringe-worthy bits of Vincent’s “rap,” but here you get an additional verse of it. It would be really terrible stuff but Vincent sounds like he’s having a blast. So like tons of other sub-par material, he saves it.

Then next, an appearance by Boris Karloff on Spike Jones’ show from 1949. The whole thing is about twenty-four minutes long, but if you’re pressed for time, skip to 18:55 in for the high point of Karloff’s involvement. If anything, it makes me wish we had more of Karloff doing comedy…because he’s excellent. Wish somebody had thought to record him as Jonathan Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace.

You can find both of those goodies after the jump.

Music Tuesday: Now Now, Martina Topley-Bird, Everything Everything & More…

Now Now: Neighbors

As I prep a write-up of this past weekend’s DragonCon adventure, I need music to keep my pulse going long enough to finish the deed. And so here we are. And like most weeks where the Monday’s a holiday, Tuesday turns out to be Monday in disguise, so this post is still very valid.

More music picks for your Monday. If you like what you hear, use the links provided to snag it for yourself from Amazon. Doing so through us gives us kickbacks, and those help pay for stuff like more bandwidth. And also so we can buy more music.

Just note: any prices we quote are accurate as of when this post goes up.

We start with the simple live fun of “Neighbors” by Now, Now–this recorded in Birmingham, Alabama last year, apparently. I’m also impressed that anybody can play two instruments at once (not to mention singing), since I can barely sing. So. Enjoy.

Stuff: And I Woulda Gotten Away With It Too, If It Hadn’t Been For Those Newsies!

Newsies Musical

Are you three guys all trying to swat the same fly?

There’s a great deal of pop culture news that comes out every day. It piles up. Some sites want you to read individual posts with 600 words about a single C-list actress joining the sixteenth Saw movie or something. If that’s your thing, great. But the rest of us have lives–thus Stuff You Need to Know. Enjoy.

  • Interesting insight into what makes a Broadway musical…in this case, Disney was getting consistent nagging about creating a Newsies musical (based on the film) so that regional to amateur theatres could tackle it. So to get that money, they created the show, with the help of original composers Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book based on the script by…Harvey Fierstein (nice). It ran at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and will wind up on Broadway in March. Set to run 101 episodes, expect it to extend its run. Apparently another Disney musical, the Peter Pan prequel, Peter and the Starcatcher, will hit in the spring. Source: Variety.

And it’s gold, folks.

The Sound Board #7: Musicians Who Want to Act & Actors Who Want to Make Music

    Needcoffee podcasting

This podcast generally covers music and other transgressions and is co-hosted by Rob Levy, Tuffley and myself. Let us know what you think.

This episode’s central topic is musicians who think they’re actors and actors who think they’re musicians. Some people can pull off one or the other–some can do both. And why is it easy for some musicians to naturally make the transition over?

Other topics include Billy Joel vs. his drummer, Paul McCartney jumps ship from EMI, Primus returns–and sucks, Cirque announces their Michael Jackson show and even more.

Your Monday Morning Mental Sorbet: Kaiju Thriller

Each Monday, we try to start off your week right: with the sort of mind-numbering WTFery that will get you prepped for your impending drudgery. We figure once your mind has been inoculated with the right amount of nonsense, you’re set. And the technical term for what we have this time around is: a doozy.

There have been multiple attempts at re-staging the dance from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video…but I think this one wins.

    Dangerous Metal!

It’s hard for me to get my head around this, so I’m just going to lay it out for you like this…with a question. What happens when veterans of the much-beloved 2 Skinnee Js join forces with a Bee Gees metal tribute band (named Tragedy) to pay tribute to Michael Jackson?

See what I mean? The brain just sort of…shuts down and slumps to one side when faced with such a question. But it’s not rhetorical. The answer is: Dangerous… the All-Metal Michael Jackson Tribute Band. Here, an audience vid. Not the best quality, but it will definitely get the point across.

    Direct link for the feedreaders.

You can get more info and find show dates on their MySpace page. You can also hear their cover of “Thriller” there. It’s metaltastic. (And here’s their Facebook.)

Your Weekend Justice #31: It’s About Wertham

    Sea Monkey

And we’re back. With even more wrongness than before. And it’s full of cholesterol too. As always, we’d like to apologize to pretty much everybody who listens and, in this case, everyone who took part. No tacos were injured during the making of this podcast. Except for the taco that injured Ken recently, but that was self-defense on Ken’s part.

Please note: this podcast, if you haven’t figured it out, is profane and not safe for consumption by children or animals. Or mammals of any sort.
