15 British Radio Shows You Should Be Listening To

BBC announcer

It’s well known–much to the chagrin of my friend and compatriot, radio DJ Rob Levy–that I don’t listen to the radio. If I do manage to know something about what’s “new and hip” (or whatever the hell you kids are calling it these days (and get off my lawn)) on the radio, it’s either by accident or, more recently, because I stumbled across it on the “What’s New” tab of Spotify.

However, what I mean is that I don’t listen to American radio. I listen to scads of British radio shows because, like television, they simply do it better. It occurs to me that some of you out there who also might want something different to listen to…you might need a guide as to what to look for. So I have snagged a list of fifteen…to give you a variety to choose from. Ken started me on this addiction and then I just went apeshit on my own with it. I listen to more of these shows on my iPod than I probably do music, frankly. Anyway, you get the show, when it was, who was on it, why you should give a damn, how you get it and what to look for if you want to try it out. A high point, if you were. Enjoy.

13 Days of Xmas 2010, Day 4: A Whose Line Christmas

Whose Line Is It Anyway? Xmas

On this day in 13 Days of Xmas history, the theme has been all over the map, but considering last year we went with Mr. Bean, it made sense to look at television specials with a UK bent. So we immediately found ourselves drawn to television improv, available on both sides of the Atlantic.

So no matter what your flavor of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, we’ve got something for you. First up, bits of the American flavor with Drew Carey, Brad Sherwood, Wayne Brady, Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles and Greg Proops.

But if you prefer the classic UK version, we give you a full Christmas episode with a cast of many: Clive Anderson, Proops, Josie Lawrence, Paul Merton, Sandi Toksvig, Tony Slattery, and Mike McShane.

Brian Blessed on Being Bonkers and Art

Brian Blessed, who previously changed your life as host of Have I Got News For You, gives a speech, cracks jokes, and shows you just what his voice is capable of. Astounding. The whole thing is twelve minutes but trust me, you’ll dig it. I’m not sure what the exact context of the speech is, I’m afraid: the YouTube vid says it was for a “Vision Aid Overseas Charity event,” but it must have been coupled with an art show…not sure. Regardless, I’d be fine with Blessed reading the ingredients off a toothpaste tube. So.

And a bonus clip from Paul Merton‘s Room 101 after the break.

We Announce Our Presidential Candidate

Okay, so we mentioned previously that we were taking the long view of a Presidential candidate. Allow me to explain. Others are going for realistic candidates. Some endorse fanciful candidates. We figure that the line between government and entertainment has been blurred to the point where we need an entertaining candidate. Therefore, we’re ready to endorse, for the closest election we can get him legal…

Brian Blessed Crushes “Have I Got News For You” in a Single Fist

Okay, friends. I know we post a lot of vids on this site. Because a lot of things are funny. But this…this will change your life. Yes, yes, I know it’s an entire episode and runs over a half-hour. Just watch it before it gets taken down. Please. I’ve even slapped them all into a single playlist so you can watch it more conveniently. NSFW for some language and the fact that Brian Blessed is Extremely Fucking Loud.

Update: For those of you who enjoy this, you might want to check out the other brilliant guest host for Have I Got News For You, Boris Johnson. We posted his performance here when we announced we were backing him for U.S. president.

Paul Merton Plays Chess

Paul Merton

Paul Merton, one of the team captains on the British panel show, Have I Got News For You?, had his own series in the early 90s. It was called, to the befuddlement of all, Paul Merton: The Series. Here’s a bit from the second series, with a bonus bit after the break.

Surprisingly, it doesn’t appear that this series is in print on DVD, either here or in the UK. So go figure.

And, as an aside, it’s sad that there’s awesome quiz/panel shows across the pond and here in America we get jack.
