Headsup: Catching Up With Animation

Elsa and Anna from Frozen: Disney Short Films Collection Blu-Ray

First up, we have the Walt Disney Short Films Collection on DVD and Blu-Ray. It has twelve animated shorts on it, ranging from 2000’s “John Henry” to the recent “Frozen Fever.” First, the good news. They’re Disney animated shorts. They’re that thing that, no matter how many times I go see a Disney film these days, I keep forgetting they’re preceded by one of these. So, thanks to my goldfish-esque memory, it’s a delightful surprise every time. Granted, your mileage may vary as to how these individual shorts play with you personally. The further good news is that these are the Blu-Ray debuts (as far as I can tell) for some of these, such as “Henry” and “Lorenzo.” And because they’re all recent animation, they look and sound fantastic in the hi-def format. The downside is that this has a number of repackaged shorts you probably own on previous releases, although if you’re a short-form animation enthusiast, then getting the debuts will probably offset that. There are never enough extras for me, but in this case, you get a short animation featurette and super-brief intros on all of the films. Commentary tracks would have been most welcome. The brilliantly wrong “Runaway Brain” was, I had thought, supposed to be included as a BD debut, but it’s instead a digital-only release.

Win Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc: Season 1, Part 2 on DVD!

Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, Season 1, Part 2 DVD: Crystal Cove Curse

It’s the second half of the first season of Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. on this two-disc set from Warner Brothers. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

The adventures of a talking dog and his four human pals as they try to unravel the strange and haunted history of their hometown. The tone is comedic, but it will never lose the edge that our heroes are in some frightening situations. The stakes are real.

Trailer? Sure thing:

Your Monday Morning Mental Sorbet: You Are Her Lucky Star

Jabberjaw on Ice

Every Monday we like to start off your week with something. A very special kind of something–it either is designed to make your brain spin or make your brain get very, very numb and quiet with unnameable dread. Whichever approach you need to face your work week, we like to help as best we can.

And not that we’re trying to follow any sort of “on ice” theme (see last week), but after finding this on Everything is Terrible, how could we resist? It’s from 1978: Hanna-Barbera’s All-Star Comedy Ice Revue. In attendance is a crapload of Hanna-Barbera characters, including the forgotten Banana Splits and The Hair Bear Bunch. Hosting the madness? Roy Clark of Hee-Haw and Bonnie Franklin of One Day at a Time.

Between Clark’s outfit, an inexplicable exercise-on-ice routine, Jabberjaw vs. Franklin, and a bizarre Hong Kong Phooey bit that will be surpassed only by the upcoming feature film…it is definitely on the numbing side of the house. Enjoy.

    Massive Cyber Monday Headsup

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? The Complete Series

Here in the midst of online shopping frenzy, we wade into give you some guidance on some items that have recently passed over our desk. If you dig what you see, if you buy it from Amazon through us, then we get kickbacks. Which helps us out a great deal. Hope you find this useful. Enjoy.

I love this time of year. We begin to see all sorts of DVD sets, ranging from gee-whiz to practical and awesome to just flat out ridiculous. Definitely on the awesome side of the equation is this early entry: the entire series of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? in a limited edition Mystery Machine package. It’s all forty-one episodes across eight discs and this marks the first release of the entire thing as a set. The Mystery Machine is pretty awesome as a collectible, complete with Shaggy and Scooby up front. Trouble is instead of having a decent way of storing the discs in the back…click on the image below to embiggen…you get a cardboard foldout bit which seems to me it might screw up the discs given time. I agree with some comments from elsewhere…they could have made better use of the back to store the eight discs.

    Threadless Holiday Sale is On

    Threadless: Geek

Well, we let you know about these things when they happen–especially this time of year–because A) Threadless t-shirts make great gifts and 2) the sales tend to make your favorite shirts go out of stock in a hurry. So get a move on, because shirts are $12 each now.

In addition to shirts like “I Be Au Sm” (pictured), may we also suggest “Attack of Literacy” for you Readers out there, the bloody brilliant Scooby-Doo vs. the zombie apocalypse “We’ve Got Some Work to Do Now,” and the morbid whimsy of Alex Solis’ “Dreams.”

Also…they have kids’ shirts and onesies. Again, great gift ideas where you can avoid buying The Toys That Make The Noise. Good luck.
