32 Days of Halloween IX, Day 22: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)

Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)

Day 22 has been considered Peter Cushing’s day in the past, so today is no different. Tonight we start with an interview from 1983 where Cushing is out promoting House of the Long Shadows. It might seem like the sort of interview you’ve seen a dozen times before, but do yourself a favor and watch it through to the end for a surprise.

Black Phoenix Puts Sherlock Holmes On The Right Scent

221B Baker Street Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

The Great Detective, Sherlock Holmes, must be one of the most scrutinized characters in fiction. Appropriate for someone who excels in observation and analysis. Study of the residents of 221B Baker Street and dissecting their stories is known as the Sherlockian game or more simply The Great Game. People regularly debate the location of Watson’s Afghan war wound (leg or shoulder) and Watson’s first name (John or James). Many have tried to determine Sherlock’s lineage, his university, and even his sexual preference. No detail is too minute for scrutiny. Since I have been writing about Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab a lot, something occurred to me. There seems to be a major aspect of speculation missing: what did Sherlock Holmes smell like?

32 Days of Halloween VII, Day 13: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)

Le Chien des Baskerville

Well, today’s been a fairly crap day. We had to say goodbye to our very own Hellpuppy Kora, after an extended battle with cancer. In her honor and memory, we present an array of hound-related media for your enjoyment.

We begin with a cheese-ridden favorite: Zoltan: Hound of Dracula, in which man’s best friend becomes man’s best fiend. It’s sort of like Benji but with more vampires. After that trailer, we switch over to a given: the Twilight Zone most appreciated by animal lovers everywhere–“The Hunt.”

DragonCon 2012: All Over Now But the Shouting (Which Never Ends)

2012 DragonCon Fun Fest final act

Because nothing says Happy Dance like the dance that comes from destroying a bit of cultural detritus.

So…DragonCon. Like most years, it descended upon Atlanta and our lives like one of those motherships out of V. And like most years, our sense of time and place was devoured just like Diana from V snacking on a guinea pig.

The strangeness of that pair of similes is testament to the slow road to recovery that all DragonCon survivors feel. Just for the record.

Other members of Need Coffee might have different stories to share, but here’s mine:

We started with Make the Bad Men Stop, our traditional opening panel held at Leigh’s X-Track. The podcast version is forthcoming, but suffice to say we spent a great deal of time talking about Marvel movies, DC movies, plus a bit about The Dark Tower among other things. As I warned the audience, Need Coffee panels meander from topic to topic until guidance comes in the form of input from the audience. And if you’re thinking that perhaps our regular podcasts could use such influence, remember that these audience comments form suggestions. Our chaos cannot be reliably channeled.

Your Weekend Justice #162: Down the Road That We Must Travel

It’s Weekend Justice: the Internet’s #1 audio trainwreck. It’s the podcast that just can’t be content to leave the past in the past. If bad pop culture was Karloff’s Mummy, this podcast would be dumb enough to break the seal on the tomb. I think that’s what I’m really trying to say here. This podcast was engineered–some might say over-engineered–by experts to escort you from the work week in the most chaotic manner possible. Please note: this podcast is profane, definitely oversexed and definitely overwrought. It is wrong and unsafe. You have been warned.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – 27 Second Review

Jude Law as Dr. Watson from Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows

Written by: Michele and Kieren Mulroney, based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
    Directed by: Guy Ritchie
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry, Rachel McAdams

Review: While not as much fun as the first one (few things are), it’s still a successful character-driven blow-shit-up-athon. Downey Jr. and Law are just as good as ever, Harris does evil mastermind quite well, and Fry is always good, even while nude. And while the slow-mo zoomy bits are excessive, the visual rewards are there too.

    Time: 14 seconds
