Starbucks Opens Theme Park in Seattle

Starbucks Roastery

Okay, not technically an actual theme park. But goddamn, it sure looks like it. And I know some people dislike Starbucks for varied and sundry reasons. Me, I’m an equal opportunity coffee drinker. I just need the liquid sleep and 99.8% of the time, I don’t care where it comes from.

Let’s set all that aside for just a moment. Forget for a second that this is about Starbucks at all. Let’s just focus on the coffee aspect of the following setup. In fact, do me this favor. Start the first video…and watch the second video muted. There may be ads preceding one or both, we can’t do anything about that…but just…do this experiment. Sync them up as best you can and then see if it doesn’t make you a little misty-eyed. If you don’t, then I must question your true love of coffee.

Starbucks Blonde Roast – Review (And Confession)

Starbucks Blonde Roast

I apologize in advance if what I am going to say will blow your mind. But try to keep your shouts of profanity to a minimum and continue reading. The truth of the matter is: coffee isn’t actually one of my favorite things in the world.

You see, I began to drink coffee as a necessity while working at a customer center as a freshman in college. Between working full-time, going to school full-time, eventually getting involved in a band full-time and trying to have some modicum of social life (I was a different person then), I needed the extra boost to get me through the day. And night. And next day.

It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. The only man alive who could take this podcast unscathed…is Rutger Hauer. This podcast was engineered–some might say over-engineered–by experts to escort you from the work week in the most chaotic manner possible. Please note: this podcast is profane, definitely oversexed and definitely overwrought. It is wrong and unsafe. You have been warned.

    Instant Coffee: A Quick Reference

    Coffee Now

Yes, it's an actual mousepad. Link at the bottom of the post.

Instant coffee. Two words that are enough to strike fear into the heart of many a coffee lover. Last year I was interviewed by a women’s magazine regarding instant coffee. Don’t ask me why. They wanted me to talk about instant coffee in about…oh, ten words. It was actually pretty ridiculous. Because I’m not keen on being reduced to ten words to describe an entire “genre” of one of my favorite topics, that’s probably why they didn’t even include me in the article. All for the better, really.

But I did my homework. I actually went out and tried instant coffee, something I haven’t done for years. Before we get to actual instant-instant coffees, let’s talk seriously about the need for instant coffee. Instant coffee, for the most part, is for people who can’t be arsed to make coffee. Trust me, there are days in which if Cosette didn’t take pity on me and make me coffee I would just gnaw on the raw beans for sustenance. But if you’re really, truly busy or can’t be arsed, here’s the #1 instant coffee choice:

Stuff: New Actors Playing Peter Parker, Jung and Freud – But Not in the Same Film, Mind You

    Andrew Garfield

There’s a lot of entertainment news going on. You honestly don’t need to know most of it. And the bits you do need to know, you don’t need to know that instant. Rather than write up a bunch of individual posts you have to read, here’s one post with everything. Boom. Done. Enjoy.

  • Amazon’s deal of the day is for both seasons of Flight of the Conchords plus a CD for $26.99, which is 55% off the normal price. Today only and while stocks last. So. There you have it. Find that here.
  • When you hear that Cronenberg is directing Viggo Mortensen in a film called A Dangerous Method, you’re probably not guessing what comes next: that it’s a love triangle featuring Jung and Freud as characters. If you want to see Mortensen and Michael Fassbender as Freud and Jung, check out the pics here. Also in the film are Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassel. It’s due out next year.

Stuff You Need to Know: Clancy, Conan and Shatner All Return (Not All at Once, Though)

    Tom Clancy: Dead or Alive
  • Tom Clancy is hitting in December with what sounds like “Crisis on Infinite Clancy,” at least according to the press release: “For the First Time Ever, Tom Clancy Brings Together 26 Years of Unforgettable Characters, including Jack Ryan, Jack Ryan, Jr., John Clark, Ding Chavez, and Mary Pat Foley, to Jointly Face Their Greatest Challenge Yet–Modern-Day Terrorism.” So it’s…Rainbow Seven? No, it’s Dead or Alive and it hits December 7th of this year. His co-author on the book is Grant Blackwood, despite the seemingly 8 point font for Blackwood’s name on the cover. Blackwood has written books based on Clancy’s characters.
  • The UK is getting Mountain Dew. Or at least a variant of it. Not sure why they feel the need to change it, but maybe that’s due (no pun intended) to the fact it’s going to be marketed there as an energy drink. If some enterprising Brit reader would like to send me a sample, I’d be quite grateful. Source.

Stuff: Viacom and YouTube Deserve Each Other

    Spy vs. Spy

(L to R) Viacom and YouTube

All the time, there’s pop culture stuff going on. You don’t need a whole post about each and every little thing that happens, or every time a DVD gets dropped on the street. We’re here to filter it for you. Now back with sections, so if you don’t give a damn, you can just skip to the parts you want. You’re welcome. Read this then go have a life.

  • The lawsuit between Viacom and YouTube just got a lot more hilarious. It was revealed that YouTube knew from the get-go that a lot of their content was pirated but just wanted the traffic. However, it was revealed that Viacom contributed to their own pirated content on the site, including getting other people to upload their stuff to help boost popularity while at the same time bitching about Those Damn Pirates. Is there a way the judge can just say, “You’re both idiots, now take your toys and go home?” Anyway, the article lines it up rather well and is recommended reading.

Starbucks: VIA Ready Brew Instant Coffee – Review

    Starbucks VIA Ready Brew

During this economic downturn Starbucks has taken a beating with people staying away from buying its higher end coffee. So, they decided some time ago to reclaim some of its footing from its devastating losses of last year by jumping into the instant coffee market. Why, you ask? Answer: companies will try anything to keep the bottom line in check.

I am not a typical coffee drinker, though when I do want a coffee I want good coffee. I do not own a coffee maker, so my need for good coffees come from coffee shops and from friends who brew great coffee (thanks, Cosette). As I do not drink coffee on a regular basis, I like to experience drinking coffee as a relaxing activity. So I thought that with spring in the air, the windows open, a nice cup of coffee would be enjoyable to have this morning.

As for instant coffee: the last time I had instant was at my mom’s house at Thanksgiving and she prefers flavor crystals. I know that instant does not have the aroma that drip coffee has and it is good for your caffeine need in a pinch. I received from Starbucks a mailed packed of “Via, Starbucks Columbian Coffee in an Instant.” Via is Italian for road, giving the consumer the idea that you can have good coffee anywhere. The cute little packets are individual servings for an 8 oz cup of joe. Starbucks have created a natural process of roasting and grinding the coffee used for instant. I opened the packets with some scissors so not to spill any of the product.

How to Get Your Free WiFi Using Your Starbucks Gold Card

    Starbucks Gold Card

Okay, this might have been painfully obvious to everyone but me–it wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened–but sitting here in Starbucks this morning I was stymied by a broken process. How do you get the two promised free hours of Starbucks from your Starbucks gold card? You’ve already registered, now what? If you check out the FAQ, it says you have to register for a free AT&T WiFi account and then you can login. Of course, you have to have used your card in the last thirty days–no problems here. But where the hell do you register for this legendary WiFi account? The guys at the Starbucks, while friendly and helpful, didn’t know that there was a step missing. And the obvious thing–stick the link in the answer to the question in the FAQ–nobody had done. So.

After some trial and error, for those who had run into same problem as me and are sitting in a Starbucks going WTF WTF, here you go. This is current as of today. You know they might change the site setup any minute, so YMMV. Also, this assumes that you’ve got your Starbucks Gold card registered. That happens at

(I’ve included both the instructions on how to navigate and direct links for where I wound up…so if this does get changed, you might be able to find your way even if it gets broken.)
