Your Weekend Justice #113: But What Color is the Bus?

It’s Weekend Justice: the Internet’s #1 audio trainwreck. It’s the podcast that wants to make sure the bus in question is moving above 50 miles an hour. Or else. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Or Sandra Bullock. Creature From The Black Lagoon The Musical: He’s Hungry

I posted a year ago that the Creature From the Black Lagoon musical was coming this spring. And I even offered some swag to anybody who would review it. It’s playing at Universal Studios Hollywood–but nobody’s taken me up on the offer. I’m just saying.

Anyway, if you’ve been wondering exactly what such a musical might look like, here’s some footage that got posted thanks to Dread Central.

    Direct link for the feedreaders.

On one hand, the Creature participating in a rawk love ballad is pretty funny. On the other hand, are they singing what I think they’re singing? Wow.

    Duff Energy Drink – Review

    Duff Energy Drink

So there we are in Universal Orlando and we run across the Simpsons area. There’s a Kwik-E Mart next to the attraction, although not as cool as the 7-11s they repurposed for the movie promo. But they did still sell Simpsons merch, including what I’m holding in my hands there: a Duff energy drink. How could I resist?

As you can see, it’s in a can that’s…well, it’s a Duff beer can. There’s not much else to be said. They nailed the design–which makes it automatically a worthwhile purchase for the novelty of those who are fans of the show. Investigating what’s inside, we find 120mg of caffeine, 25mg of guarana, 25mg of panax ginseng, 41g of sugars, 1000mg of taurine, 300% of your required B12, 100% of your B6, 50% of your B3 and 50mg of inositol. So it’s a decent showing.

How does it taste? Surprisingly…really damn good. No kidding. No real “energy drink” taste either before or after sipping, although it does have a strong soft drink kick to it–the same sort of kick of a Vault or Mountain Dew even though the taste is not the same. It also doesn’t taste like Generic Energy Drink like most novelty drinks seem to–it has a unique flavor I haven’t experienced before during my wide and reckless sampling of energy beverages. In fact, Dana Snyder, who also sampled Duff, called it when he likened the taste to Gatorade Gum. Although whereas the gum would only hold its flavor for about a femtosecond, this drink carries it. I honestly would drink this stuff on a regular basis. Perhaps I was just enjoying the taste, but it really did provide a pick-me-up for that late afternoon final push to blitz through the rest of what we wanted to see at Universal. I quite recommend it.

For Whatever It’s Worth: Harry Potter’s Wizarding World in Progress

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Revealed in 2010 - Universal Orlando

Okay, so the reason the site went a little spare for a few days is because I went to a convention in Miami, followed by a stopover for a few days in Orlando. My full report on our blitzkrieg mission to do as much Disney and Universal as we could manage shortly. But in the meantime, I thought I would share this:

As Dindrane reported last year, Harry Potter is headed for theme parkdom at Universal Orlando. So while we were there sprinting between rides, I snagged some pics. Nothing mind-shattering, mind you, so don’t let your expectations get out of hand: but if there’s one thing I learned on my trip, there are others who would be able to make more out of these pics than I.

First up, the shield that says 2010 is when we can expect the place to open. And if the official site is any indication, it’s going to be pretty damn swank.

    Creature! The Black Lagoon Musical!

The Creature From the Black Lagoon: the Musical

Universal Studios Hollywood is going to stage Creature From the Black Lagoon: The Musical beginning in spring of 2009. Admission is included with your ticket price, so no need to start saving your nickels now.

With state-of-the-art stagecraft, acrobatic choreography and hilarious, toe-tapping music, the Creature will be brought to life in a story based on the original screenplay, updated to emphasize the element of romance and just a bit of comic relief. Original new music and dazzling production numbers will keep the attraction contemporary and lively. Audiences will be immersed in the ominous environment of the deepest Amazon, enveloped by the exotic sounds and scents of the jungle. And from the production’s first moments, they’ll be thrust into an unexpectedly outrageous, strangely romantic, frequently melodic and often hilarious adventure as a monster classic is re-imagined for the 21st Century.

Am I the only one disturbed that “hilarious” was used twice there? Now, granted, admittedly the original movie is a bit smirky when you’re looking at a guy in a Fish Man costume menacing a boatful of people. And you could say that for a lot of classic movies–but within the context of their original release, they deserve a bit of respect. Still–“hilarious”? I know it’s just a theme park musical, but still.

Now, granted, if these guys were writing the musical, we’d give it a pass. Anyway, I got some swag for the first person to review this theme park musical for me. There, I’ve offered it.

Update: A poster has surfaced (no pun intended) here.

Back to the Future Ride is Headed for the Past… Permanently

    Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown

Well, it had to happen eventually. September 3rd is the last time the Back to the Future Ride will run at Universal Studios Hollywood. Instead there’s going to be a “Simpsons Thrill Ride” in its place, set to open next spring. If it’s an Itchy and Scratchy ride where an audience plant gets decapitated, then count us in.

Fans will apparently get an opportunity to be last ones to ride the Back to the Future attraction and win a DeLorean. So that would ease the grief and loss a bit, I should think.

Basically to find out how to win the DeLorean, you should go to or you can register at kiosks in the park.

The Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter: Orlando’s Just Wild About Harry, Too

    Potter Pals

Our dreams have finally come true: by 2009, we Muggles will be able to pretend to be wizards in the Harry Potter universe the Orlando way. Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and Universal Orlando Resort will be creating and opening “The Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter” within their growing Islands of Adventure theme park. The timeline plans for 2009, or maybe before. The plans are to make the park “fully immersive,” and Rowling herself is said to become “terribly excited” when she saw the plans, and she plans to be an integral part of the creation of the park, which will cater to the sights, sounds, and smells of the world of Harry Potter. There will of course be rides, as well as plenty of opportunity to spend your galleons in restaurants and shops. Will it be exciting or will it somehow cheapen the world? Will the families of Dindrane, Roz, and Cosette be forced to relocate to Orlando to stave off the impoverishment of plane tickets? Only the next three years will tell.

More info can be found here.
