32 Days of Halloween X, Day 32: Night of the Living Dead!

Duane Jones from Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Well, sorry to be so predictable. But there’s no better film to watch on Halloween and our traditional way of ending 32 Days: Night of the Living Dead. The original. You know, the good one. I finally saw it on the big screen just a week or so ago–and it was the 4K restoration. Seeing it in a cinema with an audience was kind of amazing. Here’s a brief Q&A held at the Museum of Modern Art after a screening there. You’ve got left to right: Papa George Romero, producer and “Johnny” Russell Streiner, and sound engineer Gary Streiner.

32 Days of Halloween IX, Day 32: Night of the Living Dead! (Naturally)

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Well, we’ve come to the end of another rollicking romp through the madness of First Halloween. Day 32, so you know what’s coming…but before we get to that, we go to some classic audio. First, 1944 for Vincent Price appearing with Ida Lupino in an episode of Suspense. Then…a more recent recording, that of Christopher Lee reading a tale of Ambrose Bierce.

32 Days of Halloween IX, Day 23: Revenge of the Zombies!

Revenge of the Zombies (1943)

For tonight’s opening salvo, we go to 1954 and the Popeye short, “Fright to the Finish.” In it, we have one of the classic love triangles–Popeye, Bluto and Olive Oyl–put through the filter of Halloween. And in Washington Irving fashion, the pranks that guys will create to get one over on their rivals. We’re just that way. It’s hard wired. Honest.

Walking Dead Season Five Premiere: I Was Wrong About Practically Everything and am Quite Content to Be So

Rick, closing of Walking Dead Season Four

‘Hang on, everyone. Maybe my beard can chew through this boxcar and lead us to safety.’

NOTE: What follows involves serious spoilers if you have not already seen Episode 501 of The Walking Dead, “No Sanctuary.” If you have, no worries about 502. I’m behind on everything. However, also spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which if you haven’t seen…then there’s no hope for you and you should probably just read on.

Season Four–which the more I think about it, the more I enjoy it–left me rather worried. Not worried about the fates of the characters–I’ve been reading the comic since Day One, so I know “Don’t Get Fucking Attached” is the rule of the day. (Granted, that’s what Doc said to warn me about getting involved in A Song of Ice and Fire, but it applies.) No, I was worried about what was going to happen, since a descent into cannibal-fueled torture porn wasn’t going to be my favorite thing in the world. Anyone who’s been reading this site for a while knows that I find the torture porn subgenre to be reprehensible and downright lazy, invented by cinematographers who wanted to avoid chasing victims through the woods and thought a victim bound to a chair would simply be easier to light and shoot. And having practically everybody locked in a boxcar surrounded by a freaking army of heavily armed pretty-much-guaranteed-they’re cannibals didn’t seem to leave much room for anything else.

Dance the Kung Fu

It’s Weekend Justice: the Internet’s #1 audio trainwreck, the podcast that dares to completely sully the name of its own damn website. Go figure.

32 Days of Halloween Part VIII, Day 10: I Have No Idea What Zombieing Sound Is, But I Need It

Zombieing Sound!

Okay, this is where I get excited about something unique and truly weird. Back during the very first 32 Days of Halloween, I posted about the joy of not only trailers for Japanese films, but Japanese trailers for non-Japanese films. The Day of the Dead trailer I posted at the time boasted–in English–of “ZOMBIEING SOUND.” I had no idea what that was then, still don’t know what it is now. But the trailer got taken down and I had to replace it with a trailer that was equally bad as far as trailers go, almost as awesome as far as Japanese trailers go.

However, here at Day 10, where we normally post Japanese trailers (a favorite is still the terrifying HOUSE!), Zombieing Sound is Back.
