Stuff You Need to Know: Sam Jackson is Finally (Again) Nick Fury

Sam Jackson is Nick Fury

  • Marvel has finally gotten their head out of their ass and signed Samuel L. Jackson to play Nick Fury in their barrage of upcoming movies. Sadly, Marvel Films has started to act like Marvel Comics: let’s setup this guy to be Ultimate Nick Fury, pattern the character after him, make geeks jump for joy when we cast him, and then lowball him until his involvement is in jeopardy. And this guy’s a comic geek–when you’re offering a comic geek too little money to be a pivotal comic movie character? That’s just fucking stupid. Glad they sought therapy. Source.
  • That’s right, it’s that time again. For our American readers, the government is about to set fire to a stack of your hard-earned money. Not literally, but they might as well be. Rather than belabor the point I’ll just mention that Amazon has tax software available to download to help you through this trying time of the year. And I’ll say this and get off the soapbox: I think, by law, everyone in the federal government should be required to do their taxes themselves–without aid of software or an accountant. If they can’t do it, then maybe they should think about tax law reform. I’m just saying.
  • All of that electronic crap you have cluttering up your domicile? Best Buy will take it and recycle it for $10 a piece. And for every piece, you get a $10 gift card in return. There are limitations beyond the two items a day maximum–here’s the site with more info. Source.

  • Last Friday, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has struck down California‘s violent video game law which restricted the sale and rental of them to minors. “The court upheld a lower court finding that California lawmakers failed to produce evidence that violent video games cause psychological or neurological harm to children.” The article states that the ruling could impact other states’ attempts to enact similar laws. Hell, I just like the notion that this ruling might force laws to be passed based on actual evidence. Wouldn’t that be nice? Found via.
  • Comic-Con: The Movie? Why do I get the feeling this will be SpaceCamp for the 21st Century? Source.
  • Okay, well, this just got interesting again: Michel Gondry (Spotless Mind) has signed on to helm Green Hornet. Production starts this summer for a June 25, 2010 release date. If you don’t like the green screen method (no pun intended) for action films, then Gondry’s your man. This is now very interesting.
  • JCVD, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as himself, is announced to hit home video on April 28th from Peace Arch Home Video. You can pre-snag the DVD and Blu-Ray from Amazon. Has anyone seen this? I really want to see this.
  • The movie is Pontypool. It’s a semi-zombie movie that seems like, based on what I’ve read, it might be an attempt to do a non-technological version of Pulse that doesn’t suck. Comes out in New York and Los Angeles on May 29th then will roll somewhat wider, although two days before that it will be available on demand in your own home. It hits Canada in the spring.

  • Our amigos at Seibei have their Spring 2009 line up at last. Go give them love.
  • Smoking reduces the affect that caffeine has on you. I just thought you should hear it from somebody who cares.
  • Suicide Squad, the DC comic that featured supervillains being tagged with explosive bits and being told to behave and go do this mission for the government or else is now at Warner Brothers being scripted for a film. I actually enjoyed the series from the 80s. If done properly, it could be cool. Translation: will probably suck. Source.
  • T-Shirt Hell lives.
  • Terminator 2 is getting a pretty hefty treatment from Lionsgate on May 19th. The Skynet Edition has Terminator 2 on Blu-Ray and there’s also the “Limited Edition T2 Complete Collector’s Set.” Six discs, it comes ‘with a 14″ T-800 Endoskull bust that plays sound effects from the film while its eyes light up, this collectible set features the Terminator 2 Skynet Edition Blu-ray plus both the Extreme Edition DVD and Ultimate Edition DVD – which, combined, include every T2 special feature ever released on DVD.’ No pre-order yet, I’ll keep an eye out. Our review of the Extreme Edition is here.
