Headsup: Conspiracy, Discovery, and Cartoon COVID

Reacher Season One DVD

REACHER follows Jack Reacher, a veteran military police investigator who has just recently entered civilian life. Reacher is a drifter, carrying no phone and the barest of essentials as he travels the country and explores the nation he once served. When Reacher arrives in the small town of Margrave, Georgia, he finds a community grappling with its first homicide in 20 years. The cops immediately arrest him and eyewitnesses claim to place Reacher at the scene of the crime. While he works to prove his innocence, a deep-seated conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will require Reacher’s keen mind and hard-hitting fists to deal with. One thing above all is for sure: They picked the wrong guy to take the fall. — from Paramount

Starring Alan Ritchson (who is roughly the size of three and a half Tom Cruises), all eight episodes are here along with a behind-the-scenes featurette and an interview with Reacher creator Lee Child. (Also Need Coffee fave Bruce McGill is playing one of the antagonists.) A second season is somewhere in the Amazon Prime machinery getting cranked out, and the first season episodes are still up there for viewing. If you’re a big fan of the books or the character in general, you might want to snag this to place on your shelf for posterity. With more bonus bits, it would be a definite acquisition recommendation. Regardless, it can be found on Amazon.

Star Trek Discovery Season 4 Blu-Ray

Season four of Star Trek: Discovery finds finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery facing a threat unlike any they’ve ever encountered. With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact, they must confront the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all. The fourth season stars Sonequa Martin-Green (“Commander Michael Burnham”), Doug Jones (“Commander Saru”), Anthony Rapp (“Lt. Commander Paul Stamets”), Mary Wiseman (“Ensign Sylvia Tilly”), Wilson Cruz (“Dr. Hugh Culber”), David Ajala (“Cleveland “Book” Booker”) and Blu del Barrio (“Adira”). Ian Alexander (“Gray”) also appears in Season four. — from Paramount

When it comes to Star Trek titles on home media, Paramount rarely stiffs you in the bonus department. In addition to all thirteen episodes, there’s a behind-the-scenes footage talking with cast and crew, an FX featurette, a commentary on the final episode, deleted scenes, gag reel, and a featurette about what it took to pull off the show despite COVID. Four flavors are available: DVD, Blu-Ray, Limited Edition Blu-Ray Steelbook, and Digital. Fans of the show or Trek completists are going to want to own this…the bonus bits make for a suitable selling point. Grab it for yourself over at Amazon.

Pulp Fiction 4K Blu-Ray Steelbook

Critics and audiences worldwide hailed PULP FICTION as the star-studded movie that redefined cinema in the 20th century. Writer-director Quentin Tarantino delivers an unforgettable cast of characters— including a pair of low-rent hit men (John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson), a gangster’s wife (Uma Thurman), and a desperate prizefighter (Bruce Willis)—in a wildly entertaining and exhilarating adventure of violence and redemption. — from Paramount

What’s new in this release is it’s in 4K Ultra HD. That being said, if you’ve not experienced the legacy bonus content, it’s actually nothing to sneeze at. There’s a retrospective (around forty-five minutes’ worth), a critics’ roundtable discussion, a documentary from the original release timeframe, deleted scenes and more. There is a limited edition collector’s steelbook version for those who salivate over such things. If you want this in true 4K, then some variation of this is your ticket, but the bonus bits are worth checking out at some point regardless. Accost a copy for yourself from Amazon.

South Park: Post COVID Blu-Ray

What happened to the children who lived through the Pandemic? Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny survived but will never be the same Post COVID. If Stan, Kyle and Cartman could just work together, they could go back in time to make sure COVID never happened and save Kenny’s life. In “The Return of COVID,” traveling back to the past seems to be the easy answer until they meet Victor Chaos. — from Paramount

Two longer length specials that make up the rest of Season 24 are here for home media, providing a glimpse into the future of the South Park characters. A future where they’re trying to alter their past and prevent COVID from warping their lives. Alas, there’s nothing in the way of bonus bits…not even the mini-commentaries that can accompany South Park episodes. As a result, if you’re a completist, you might want this for the shelf. (And you might want to buy another shelf, since there’s now going to be at least thirty seasons of the show.) Find it over at Amazon
