Why The Invisibles? Well, because it's perfect for the big screen treatment.  Granted, the BBC is about to give it a go, but Neverwhere's hitting the theaters soon, so anything goes!  It's got conspiracy, it's got aliens, it's got demons, it's got lots of guns, and it's got Grant Morrison.  What more could you be looking for in a flick?  If you haven't read the series, fix that.  Go pick up the Trade Paperback from your local comic store and give it a read.  I hate to trim something down to a few words, but if I had to describe it, it would be "Quentin Tarantino's Illuminatus! Trilogy."  If you read it and don't want someone to hand you your badge, then you've got real problems.

What's the scoop?   I would base the film on the first TPB, Say You Want a Revolution, dealing with the acquisition of Jack Frost as a member and then their whacked out journey in search of yet another potential Invisible--The Marquis deSade.

Jason Isaacs as King Mob:  I was seconds--mere seconds--away from calling Tim Roth on the phone and saying, "Tim, shave your head--you're my Mob!"  But then, I went and saw this flick, Event Horizon, and found someone who looks perfect for the role.  Jason Isaacs, who plays the ship's doctor, has one scene where he and Fishburne are baring their souls (you know the one?) and he looks dead-on into the camera--THAT's King Mob, buddy.  Here's your rings, put them in place and let's go get the others.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Frost:  My mind was made up once I saw Fanny and Jack in the limo on the way back from the Harlequinade in recent issues.  There's one page in which Jack looks like DiCaprio--every--single--frame.  He's young and he's a very powerful actor.  The perfect one to go nuts in the windmill.  But many have expressed resentment over this decision.  However, nobody can tell me who else could play the part, and in Leo's defense I think he really is looking for the right opportunity to pull a 12 Monkeys on us.  You remember how everybody thought Brad Pitt was just another pretty boy actor until he went gonzo batshit in that film?  Well, this is your chance, Leo.  Don't disappoint us.

Sadie Frost as Ragged Robin:  I must say that, again, I was almost ready to send Julianne Moore a thing of clown white, but then I recalled yet another incredible redhead--remember Bram Stoker's Dracula?  Remember one of the only good things about it?  Yeah, didn't think you had forgotten.  Sadie Frost needs to play our telepathic beauty.  Ready?  Go!

John Leguizamo as Lord Fanny:  Leguizamo can do just about anything, true, but drag is a given.  He would be the perfect choice for our Brazilian drag queen.  Considering his comedic prowess and also his turn as Tybalt in Romeo + Juliet, I think he's our man...er...yeah, man.

Jada Pinkett as Boy:   For this role you need someone who can kick serious butt, since our friend Boy is a martial artist and ex-cop.  Jada proved herself capable in Set It Off, so let's hand her a badge.

Richard Harris as Tom O'Bedlam: We needed someone special to play Jack's Invisible tutor, and first I thought of Richard Harris, who's always good and yet another actor we don't see enough of. Then, I thought of Nicol Williamson, who plays the tutor to the fledgling Spawn.  Then, I read that Williamson took over the role after Harris vacated it.  Finally, after much deliberation, I really wanted to see Harris deliver the line "I'm one holy f&$%ing terror."

Danny DeVito as Marquis deSade:  Morrison's Marquis is short and rotund, and yet interested in something to do with dogs.  Whatever.  Read a book!  DeVito is a great actor and would have lots of fun playing the originator of sadism.  (If you haven't read the comic, there's a great scene with the Marquis in an S&M club.  E-ticket, I assure you.)

Mary Stuart Masterson as Mary Shelley: Okay.  I admit it.  I've been itching for a place to cast Masterson.  It's a damn shame she wasn't at least nominated for Fried Green Tomatoes.  Oh, well.  I don't recall a period piece that she has played in, so what a better way to start out than in the Invisibles' universe?  Kinda like throwing someone in at the bottomless end, eh?

Matthew McConaughey as Percy Shelley:  A lot of people don't seem to like Matthew.  Maybe he's too--pretty, I don't know.  Regardless, I think it would be a good choice to cast him here, and hopefully Amistad will prove me right later this fall.

Billy Zane as Byron:  Zane is a really cool guy.  Otherwise he wouldn't be our Superman.  But regardless, the thespian he played in Tombstone inspired me to cast him as Byron.  We shall see...

As An Aside...  The three artists at the end of the list were last seen together in the 1986 film Gothic, played by these people:  Natasha Richardson as Mary Shelley (whose sister Joely was up for the role in this film); Julian Sands as Percy Shelley; Gabriel Byrne as Byron.
