Our Musical Supergroup Wish List

Them Crooked Vultures

So last week saw the release of Them Crooked Vultures’ debut album. TCV is Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Josh Homme of many things including Queens of the Stone Age, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.

'New Fang' by Them Crooked Vultures

This qualifies TCV as a “supergroup,” i.e. musicians from other bands decide to merge for a period of time and crank out some hopefully awesome music. Some other recent examples are Audioslave, which was Chris Cornell taking Zack de la Rocha’s place in Rage Against the Machine. And A Perfect Circle, with Rev. Maynard from Tool, James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins, and some of the musicians who comprised bits of Nine Inch Nails.

So this got us thinking: what other supergroups would we hope to see formed? Musical dreamcasting, as it were.

'Oz is Ever Floating' by Oysterhead

Doc said:

  • …he’d like to see Les Claypool touring with the remnants of Morphine. Which I think is a fantastic idea. Les Claypool already has about twenty-six musical acts, so what’s one more? As long as it doesn’t get in the way of him doing another Oysterhead album–and I guess that would be one of my votes, is the reformation of Oysterhead. (Which was, incidentally, Claypool, Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland from The Police.)
  • a one-off recording of Audioslave with Neil Fallon as the frontman. I think that would be interesting. I think you could put a bunch of people at the head of the aforementioned Rage musical portion. Corey Glover, if he ever takes another break from Living Colour, could go kick some ass on that. Skin, lead singer of Skunk Anansie. Hell, I’d like hear Weird Al record a single with Audioslave. No, I’m not kidding.
  • Tuffley added some ideas as well:

  • Muddy Waters fronting The Black Keys.
  • Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, J Mascis, and Manyard James Keenan in a suped-up and slightly weirder version of A Perfect Circle.
  • Al Jourgensen, Mike Patton, and DJ Shadow. “Don’t know what they’d do, but now I’d really like to hear it.” Agreed.
  • Cee-Lo Green, Martina Topley Bird, ?Questlove, and Dangermouse. “Actually, now that I think about it–anyone with teamed with ?Questlove and/or The Roots would work.” I think just about anything involving Martina Topley-Bird and Dangermouse would be fantastic.
  • Some Martina…because I can. And this you need regular sized.

    Direct link for the feedreaders.

  • Chris Cornell, Trent Reznor, and Timbaland. “Never gonna happen, just the thought alone is very funny.”
  • As for me…

  • I think Mike Patton (and potentially all of Fantomas) and Ken Nordine should get together for a project.
  • And I think Tom Waits taking George Harrison‘s spot on a third iteration of The Traveling Wilburys would be interesting.
  • What combos would you like to see become actual supergroups? Let us know in the comments.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
