Shopping cart

I've found myself doing something a little strange lately, and I must admit, its improving the quality of my grocery shopping. I park in the parking lot, hit the Starbucks next door and arm myself with a latte containing lots of caffeine, grab a cart, buckle my purse in, and away I go!

It happens as soon as I aim my cart toward the produce aisle. The music piping in from the overhead speakers permeates my brain, which blurts out, "Hey, I know this song!" Brain communicates with mouth and soon I am singing along. By the time I hit the cereal aisle, I've crooned two and a half songs. (The other half of a song was ruined by announcements about fresh bread and a deli special.) On that song, I kept singing and as soon as the announcement finished, the song resumed at the precise point where I was. The more comfortable I became, the louder I sang. I even broke into harmony on several songs.

Confession

Widge's Note: Please welcome Su, a new contributor here at Needcoffee. Su's a friend who goes a long way back, rediscovered via Facebook. Useful thing, that. In this, her first of hopefully many bits to come, she introduces herself in such a way as to show she's definitely One Of Us. Please welcome her to the Needcoffee Army with warmth and espresso.

I'm having an affair and I don't feel one bit guilty. Actually, if I'm truly honest with myself, I'm having several affairs. At the same time. I know! I live dangerously!

There's the Colombian. Ah… what a way to wake up. He's rich, smooth and knows just how to get my brain cells going. I need the Colombian before I hit the shower. Buenos Dias, indeed!

At lunch, I have a quickie with the Frenchie. My friends say Frenchie comes on too strong, but I like strong! Sometimes, I only have ten minutes for Frenchie, but boy does he make those ten minutes count--and sends me off with a buzz to beat the band!

Before dinner, I might take a nip from the Indonesian. Ooh, spicy and light. Five minutes with the Indonesian and I'm perky and ready for any dinner conversation.

Booster Gold #6 cover art

Okay, for those of you haven't read the latest issue of Booster Gold, #6, you might want to run away.

I'll wait.

Gone? Okay, fine. The gist is this:

Booster Gold gets visited by three different versions of the Blue Beetle so he can go back in time and prevent the Ted Kord Blue Beetle from getting his brains blown out by suddenly evil Maxwell Lord as part of the suddenly lame revelation that the fun Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League years were fun because it was all part of Lord's plot to make the League ineffective.

Get that? Fun = ineffective in the new DC.

The spoilerific bit is that Booster succeeds, and rescues Ted, even though no one knows that Ted survived. He and Booster are now non-hero heroes, unknown but righting wrongs. Blue & Gold.

Now some might think this is dumb, but I would disagree: the decision to kill Ted in the first place was misguided and stupid. Booster is acting like himself, which is odd for comics these days. In a day and age where Spider-Man--even though he personally knows gods, Inhumans, Reed Richards, Tony Stark not to mention is running around with Dr. Strange--decides to make a deal with the devil to save his Aunt May, it's odd for characters to do things that they would, you know, actually do. And Booster saying, dammit, I'm going to go save Ted, is exactly what that character would do.

Richard Hawley: "Lady

One year has winded down and another one has begun. You can tell by the chaos. The malls and stores are filled with crashing bores and generally scary people. Traffic is nuts. People are "fake nice" and smile way too much.

It's times like this that make me glad I shop online or at my indie retailer. Anyway, holiday merriment aside, 2007 was quite a year. It was a year of laughter, smiles, moving, lots of DJing, lots of books and a whole lot of generally trying to keep up.

So I guess this column will be a summary of sorts but also one with news and insights and all that jazz.

Anyway let's dispense with this stuff early on…

List Madness! Because I am going to be bothered relentlessly for them--here are my Top 10 lists. Yes, I have no taste, now let me live in peace.

New year, same rules: Stuff Happens and I bring the smarm. Let the sniping begin!

Radiohead-In-Rainbows-cover

Radiohead topped the charts with the physical retail release of In Rainbows which was released in North America via a licensing agreement between the band and Dave Matthews-owned ATO Records. The main difference between the CD release and the download release back in October is that you will most likely not be able to name your own price for the CD. Although that’s never really stopped anyone from trying that tact at Best Buy.

In Rainbows actually charted a week earlier due to some retailers breaking the original January 1st street date to reportedly protest the earlier online stunt. ATO is currently mulling its options for a response--including delaying when those same retail outlets get the upcoming new Dave Matthews Band album. Which kind of works out, since most of DMB's remaining fans will likely "name their own price" for it anyway.
