Dancing Candy, Moralizing Ghosts And Other Festive Fantasies From Black Phoenix
Posted on 12.25.10 by ScottC @ 7:00 am
Krampus for Black Phoenix Christmas

'Tis the season to have a stuffed up nose. With winter comes blocked nasal passages, dripping yellow mucus, and breathing through your mouth. But 'tis the season for Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Yule perfume collections. So get aggressive on your proboscis. Blow your nose into that hanky, flush your nose with that neti pot, and take Sudafed after you prove you're not a meth cooker. Because there are Black Phoenix scents out in the world and you should get ready to enjoy them.

As usual, Black Phoenix celebrates Yule throughout the world. They have scents based on the Chanukkiyah (or menorah for us gentiles), the ancient Greek festival of harvesting and drinking of wine, Haloa, and the Icelandic version of Santa Claus, the mischievous Jólasveinar or Yule Lads. If you prefer perfumes that celebrate the more natural essence of the season, you can get the white snowy beauty of Winter-Time, the bitter cold of Autumn and Winter, and the hopeful Woods In Winter. And what would the season be without sweets to fatten you up and help you self medicate when visiting the relatives? There is the spicy creamy goodness of Eggnog , for our Jewish readers there is chocolate treat Gelt, and who doesn't want a Gingerbread Poppet (I'm guessing poppet is more politically correct than man)? And if you want to have some adult fun unwrapping...things, there is Lick It Vigorously.

Headsup: Musical and Christmas-y Bits For Your Perusal
Posted on 12.13.10 by Widge @ 6:25 am

Delerium: Epiphany DVD
Dio: Holy Diver Live Blu-Ray
Classic Albums: Rush: 2112 and Moving Pictures Blu-Ray

A selection of music and musical bits first up...we go to MVD's release of Epiphany, the first (to my knowledge) live concert DVD of Delerium, a band I first encountered (apparently like a lot of people) with their 1994 album, Semantic Spaces. Now that I think about it, it was about the same time that I also encountered Front Line Assembly via their earlier album State of Mind, in search of the dripping-with-samples "No Tomorrow." Even though I believe I discovered them around the same time, I didn't realize the former was a side project of the latter. Go figure. Anyway, this DVD contains mostly footage from a 2008 live performance in Washington DC with other bits coming from a couple of other stops on their tour. It features a number of songs from "Incantation" and "Flowers Become Screens" off of Spaces up to "Angelicus" from their (at the time) most recent album. Of course also included is "Silence," with Leigh Nash taking over for Sarah McLachlan. The fan of their music is going to appreciate getting a chance to see them live, and the $14 this will run you while I write this--that's at least one concert ticket right there. Although one thing to bear in mind: Delerium live is different than Delerium in the studio, so if you're expecting to hear an exact reproduction, be forewarned. And if you're not already a fan, you really should check out Spaces. I think you'll dig it. Click here to snag the DVD from Amazon.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? The Complete Series

Here in the midst of online shopping frenzy, we wade into give you some guidance on some items that have recently passed over our desk. If you dig what you see, if you buy it from Amazon through us, then we get kickbacks. Which helps us out a great deal. Hope you find this useful. Enjoy.

I love this time of year. We begin to see all sorts of DVD sets, ranging from gee-whiz to practical and awesome to just flat out ridiculous. Definitely on the awesome side of the equation is this early entry: the entire series of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? in a limited edition Mystery Machine package. It's all forty-one episodes across eight discs and this marks the first release of the entire thing as a set. The Mystery Machine is pretty awesome as a collectible, complete with Shaggy and Scooby up front. Trouble is instead of having a decent way of storing the discs in the back...click on the image below to embiggen...you get a cardboard foldout bit which seems to me it might screw up the discs given time. I agree with some comments from elsewhere...they could have made better use of the back to store the eight discs.

Threadless: Black Hole Friday Lasts All Weekend Long
Posted on 11.27.10 by Widge @ 3:32 pm

Land of the Free? by Threadless

Well, the t-shirt from Threadless we've pictured here--Land of the Free? by David Vincent Wolf--would be enough to warrant a post. The insane security theater of the TSA, where they specialize in everything from making children and sexual assault victims cry to irradiating your genitals, really pisses me off. So this manages to be a great statement on that and the eroding liberties we have here in America and still be funny. So there's that.

But you should also be aware that they have a Black Hole Friday sale, with a crapton of shirts on sale for $10 and hoodies for $30. I know it's Black Hole Friday but it doesn't end until 10am CST Tuesday. The sale includes Land of the Free? and many others. So hey, holiday shopping for cheap is your friend. Follow this link and enjoy.

Weird S--- Round-Up
Posted on 11.23.10 by Wolven @ 5:22 am

Hello, all. Wolven here--and I'm bringing you a curatorial collection of some recent or upcoming events, films, books, and articles which trip the edge of the strange and downright weird. I hope to make a kind of regular feature, but I make no promises; only vague assurances which leave you to wake, uncertain, in the dark hours before dawn, sweating, wondering at the unknowable capriciousness of the cruel mocking laughter of a seemingly adversarial universe, only to realise that you, yes you--

Sorry. Got away from myself for a second, there. Anyway, let's get started, shall we?

Threadless' Latest Shirt Asks: Can't We All Just Get Along?
Posted on 11.14.10 by Widge @ 3:58 am

House Brawl - Harry Potter shirt from Threadless

So we haven't done a lot of pointing you at Threadless recently. Partly because we've been so damn busy. Partly because there hasn't been a huge stack of shirts over there that we felt we had to get in front of you or risk dying by lack of geek-informativeness. And a lot of them aren't black. But as you know, ever once in a while a non-black shirt is so revelatory that we feel the need to tell you about it anyway. And this is just such a shirt.

I don't know that I've ever seen a series summed up in one picture before--certainly not one so apt and so hilarious at the same time. And with such gorgeous results. It's House Brawl by Alex Solis and Alice X. Zhang. And this is apparently the highest scoring shirt in Threadless history. Damn. Click through to see the full skinnee on it, but suffice it to say that the shirt is not in 3D either. It's not in black, sure, but what can you do?

BPAL Gives You The Essense Of Gothic Horror
Posted on 10.24.10 by ScottC @ 8:11 pm
Happy Halloween from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

Once more all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun. Now it is the time of year that the graves, all gaping wide, let forth their sprites in the church-way paths to glide. And by the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.

Is it Shakespeare's secret, black, and midnight hags? No, the wickedness that approaches is the magnificently magical muses of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. Once again the spirit of the season has brought them to new heights (or depths) of inspiration. Once again I have been deemed worthy to sample their fragrant efforts and relate the experience to you. We have taken this journey before with Black Phoenix to Sleepy Hollow and to the vampire's crypt. But I'm sure there will be plenty of new treats in store for us this year.

So get that broomstick between your legs and prepare for a hard ride... through Black Phoenix's Halloween collections.
