08.17.10 by Widge @ 11:44 pm There are a lot of things out there you can buy. We try to give you the information you need to make an educated purchasing decision. Because we have no lives. If you find the info here to be of use, do us a favor and purchase stuff from Amazon through us. Especially if you were going to buy the stuff anyway. That gives us kickbacks, which help pay for things. Like the server. And coffee. And therapy. Thanks.

07.29.10 by ScottC @ 11:28 pm ![]() I think we have finally cleared our karmic debt for releasing the Burger King back into the advertising world. It seems that Weekend Justice, Needcoffee's splendid train-wreck of a podcast, along with the Ken P.D. Snydecast and the those adorable Irish lads Aaron and Brian on Cabin Fever has inspired a babble of podcasts. These podcasts show that you can entertain people across the world without needing a major media conglomerate force feeding you onto the general public. You can produce something and get it out there. If we can do it, so can you. Now I'm not going to list all of them because you are all our children and love you all equally. Now, we here at Needcoffee do visit some podcasts on occasion but that does not mean we favor one over the other. I will not tolerate any squabbling between any of you. Don't make me get out the paddle. (You know how much I like the paddle.) Categorized as: Headsup

07.21.10 by ScottC @ 12:27 am ![]() One of things I like about Black Phoenix is they aren't cultural snobs. Their perfume descriptions usually feature erudite poetry; they have collections based on fine paintings, ancient Japanese art, and the plays of Shakespeare. However, instead of eschewing current pop cultures as being too low brow, they embrace and find inspiration in more modern fare. We have had perfumes inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Neil Gaiman, and even on the newest anachronistic genre steampunk. Black Phoenix also has plenty of perfume collections based on that modern medium that mixes vibrant art, epic storytelling, and underwear perverts: comic books. Now Black Phoenix is adding two new perfume collections inspired by comics from Boom! Studios and Top Cow Productions. Categorized as: Headsup

07.11.10 by ScottC @ 9:29 pm "MONKEYS!" I immediately dive under my desk and reach for my Etheric Disruptor. I take a breath and pop up ready to fire. Instead of a group of rampaging terrorist gorillas, it is the Junior Science Villain staring at me with a look that says "This must one of these grown up things I don't understand yet." I relax and was going to explain to him that we were having some problem with the more radical elements of simian culture after Dindrane make some disparaging comments about gorillas during a Weekend Justice. But I had a feeling it would just sound like the grown ups in a Peanuts cartoon. So I simply said, "Did you want something?" He showed me a coloring book with a monkey on the cover. It was a nice little coloring book from artist and illustrator Chet Phillips. It contains portraits from his Steampunk Monkey Nation and Society of Sinister Simians series. Imagine chimpanzees and bonobos in top hats and wielding brass implements of death. And plenty of goggles. Categorized as: Headsup

07.09.10 by Widge @ 4:13 pm ![]() On our recent road trip, we made lots of interesting discoveries. One of my favorites was this gem: Carter's Antique Toy Museum in Zionsville, Indiana. About seventeen miles from Indianapolis, it's a building with three floors that holds a single collection of toys. But Jebus, what a collection. Entire cases of Lionel train cars, a basement full of coin-operated rides for kids, and even an animatronic tree that will give you nightmares. Also in the basement, two ancient lightgun arcade games and bumper cars--both of which you can utilize with your admission. It's amazing. It's like a better organized toy version of what I assume the Ackermansion must have been like. I hope to get an interview with the owner soon, as I think he could use some help. Taxes and expenses of running the museum are just eating away at his wallet to the point where he might shut down the museum at the end of the year. Go check out the photo album of 90+ shots that I've stuck over at our Facebook page and you tell me if you want to see that happen. If you're anywhere near the place, it's worth checking out. It's pretty damn amazing. Here's their official site. Categorized as: Headsup
