Victorian Xmas Cards: A Window Into Insanity

An illustration of a mouse riding a lobster, carrying a bit of paper that has (I think) some French on it.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Xmas cards of the Victorian age, you should really treat yourself. And as you peruse the homicidal frogs, anthropomorphic food, and gangs of cats with truncheons, just remember: this was a time when morphine, cocaine, heroin, and numerous other drugs were more readily available than today. I’m Just Saying.

This video takes you through some of the cards in the Victoria & Albert Museum’s collection. Some of them are mind-blowing. Others are batshit insane. Enjoy.
