Widge’s Sonic Emporium on Louder Than War Radio – 15 July 2023

Episode 5
“When You Sing, The Sound is Gone”

Welcome. Here are what passes for show notes. The reason the playlist is in the format you find it is because I really need a life. The very overwrought explanation can be found here.

Format is:
Artist/Band Name – “Song Name” – Album Name – (Band’s/Artist’s Country of Origin, Year of Song’s Original Release)

The Oh Hellos — “Eat You Alive” — Through the Deep Dark Valley — (USA, 2012) — Bandcamp

The Emperors – “Karate” – (USA, 1966)

Hide with Spread Beaver – “Pink Spider” – (Japan, 1998)

Busdriver – “Casting Agents and Cowgirls” – RoadKillOvercoat – (USA, 2007)

TEKE::TEKE – “Yoru Ni” – Shirushi – (Canada, 2021) — Bandcamp

The Wind and The Wave – “You’ve Got Time” – Covers One – (USA, 2015)

Mosno – “Belen (remix)” – The Low-Tech – (Sudan, 2008) — Bandcamp

The Pixies – “Wave of Mutilation (uk surf)” – Here Comes Your Man single – (USA, 1989)

Is this another reference to Pump Up the Volume? You must decide.

Cults – “We’ve Got It” – Static – (USA, 2013)

As always when I make a reference to “my favorite album” of any given year that means I would listen to it and then just listen to it again. Over and over. So.

Fela Ransome Kuti & Nigeria 70 – “Wayo (1st version) – Koola Lobitos 64-68/The 69 Los Angeles Sessions – (Nigeria, 2006)

World’s End Girlfriend – “Shadow Reflecting the Light” – Air Doll soundtrack – (Japan, 2009) — Bandcamp

Thee More Shallows – “2AM” – More Deep Cuts – (USA, 2005)

Santino Surfers – “Three Corners One View” – Santino Surfers – (Denmark, 2020) — Bandcamp

Maryam Saleh, Maurica Louca, Tamer Abu Ghazaleh – “Nefsif Akli” – Lekhfa – (Egypt, 2017) — Bandcamp

Just a Band – “Till We Try” – Sorry for the Delay – (Kenya, 2012) — Bandcamp

Cal Tjader – “Mamblues (single version)” – Demasiado Caliente – (USA, 1960)

Tracey Thorn – “Small Town Girl” – A Distant Shore – (UK, 1982)

Telek – “To Pol” – Serious Tam – (Papua New Guinea, 2000)

Okay. This is just an illustration of how my brain is dysfunctional. In the show I brought up RealWorld Records and then proceeded not to explain why. This album was one of my earlier acquisitions from them. That’s why I namedropped them again. Times like this I worry about the effectiveness of my meds.

Desert Sessions – “Nenada” – Vol. 7: Gypsy Marches – (USA, 2001)

Dur-Dur Band – “Keene Gardaran” – Vol. 2 – (Somalia, 1987) — Bandcamp

Bob Marley & The Wailers – “Stop That Train” – Catch That Fire – (Jamaica, 1973)

Alkaline Trio – “Is This Thing Cursed?” – Is This Thing Cursed? – (USA, 2018)

Skeleton Club – “Punch Lines” – Death, Love & Money – (Canada, 2019) — Bandcamp

Pixx – “Bitch” – Small Mercies – (UK, 2019)

Bikini Kill – “Reject All American” – Reject All American – (USA, 1996) — Bandcamp

Polly Scattergood – “The End Was Glorious” – In This Moment – (UK, 2020)

Mose Allison – “Lost Mind” – Mose Allison Sings – (USA, 1963) — Bandcamp

Here’s the Frank Oz episode of Desert Island Discs, recorded in 1981. I highly recommend checking out some of the folks you know who’ve appeared on that show. I find the interviews to be excellent and the musical selections to be very revealing.

Some quick recommendations: Alice Cooper, Neil Gaiman, Judi Dench, Sue Perkins

And the one with Wendell Pierce is one of the best interviews I’ve ever heard. Just amazing.

Firewater – “I Still Love You, Judas” – The Ponzi Scheme – (USA, 1998)

Ché Aimee Dorval – “The Widow” – The Widow single – (Canada, 2018) — Bandcamp
