The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – 27 Second Review

Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Written by: Peter Jackson, Guillermo Del Toro, Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens, based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien
Directed by: Peter Jackson
Starring: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch

Review: In what’s winding up to be a six (possibly seven?) part Tolkien franchise, I enjoyed this one more than its predecessor. The action, while cartoonish, is fairly consistent, and we get several little treats in the form of cameos, combat barrels, and elves using various enemies as surf boards. Not to mention Cumberbatch and Armitage having a sassy insult throwdown.

Happy Bloomsday, Everyone

Guinness and Mug

Well, it’s still Bloomsday here in the U.S., anyway. And this mug of Guinness is my own personal celebration, since I can’t be in Dublin to wander about and see the literary mayhem firsthand.

El Fitz from Cabin Fever reminded me that it was today, June 16th, which of course reminded me of this line from Ulysses:

Stephen, greeting, then all amort, followed a lubber jester, a wellkempt head, newbarbered, out of the vaulted cell into a shattering daylight of no thought.

That is, no lie, my favorite sentence in the English language. Anyway, a couple of lovely bits after the break. Enjoy.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – 27 Second Review

Jude Law as Dr. Watson from Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows

Written by: Michele and Kieren Mulroney, based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Directed by: Guy Ritchie
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry, Rachel McAdams

Review: While not as much fun as the first one (few things are), it’s still a successful character-driven blow-shit-up-athon. Downey Jr. and Law are just as good as ever, Harris does evil mastermind quite well, and Fry is always good, even while nude. And while the slow-mo zoomy bits are excessive, the visual rewards are there too.

Wayhomer Review #96: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Jared Harris as Moriarty and Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Episode #96 for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, in which our protagonist tries to explain the difference between having fun and trying to have fun, touts excellent performances by the leads and neglects to mention that the ability to call down slo-mo must mean Holmes possesses the Speed Force.

Wayhomer Review of the first film is here.

13 Days of Xmas 2011 – Day 4: Holiday Hocus Pocus

Stephen Fry QI Christmas

Last year we did some more Brit Christmas TV fun, bringing you the monster-sized Christmas Whose Line Is It Anyway? episode from their second season. And led off from a bit out of the American version. So keeping with that them, we turn again to the best show the BBC thinks Americans aren’t smart enough to watch: QI.

Yes, it’s true: the BBC iPlayer is due to hit our shores any day now. And when it does, if you are a Anglophile worth a damn, get it. I know it’s iPad-only, but buy it anyway. Seriously. Otherwise, how will we prove to them that we can recognize good television? I mean, they were 100% right about how nobody gets Doctor Who over here…right? Rrright.

This magic-focused holiday party features Sir Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Graham Norton, Lee Mack and…I dunno, some kid. I know him from somewhere…
