Now we come to a film that you know its legacy even if you’ve never seen it. Conrad Veidt (Hands of Orlac), is the star and his look in this film would go on to influence a character you might have heard of: The Joker. (In case that image above wasn’t a dead giveaway.) In fact, DC has pretty recently introduced an evil version of Batman called The Batman Who Laughs, a call back to this.

And yes, playing opposite Veidt is Mary Philbin from the 1925 Phantom of the Opera. Other actors of the era include Brando Hurst (White Zombie) and Cesare Gravina (the 1923 Hunchback of Notre Dame). Enjoy.

It’s available as a 4K Blu-Ray from Amazon. I haven’t seen it, but if it looks anything like The Old Dark House it’ll be amazing.
