Your Weekend Justice #247: We Never Thought This Would Happen to Us, But…

Smokey and the Bandit Snowman Truck

It’s Weekend Justice: the Internet’s #1 audio trainwreck…and holy shit, we’ve worked our way out of the 2015 recording archive and we careen into 2016. Amusingly, at the time of this recording, we still have no idea what a shitshow the year will be. Come join us and remember a kinder, more naive universe.

Stuff You Need to Know: Vice Squad to Hit HBO

Shane Smith, founder of Vice

Shane Smith (center), founder of Vice, and friends

  • Looks like Shane Smith and the maniacs at Vice are getting their own news magazine program on HBO. Looks like we may be getting expanded versions of stuff they’ve done previously, like for their online Vice Guide to Everything and the book/DVD they put out a few years back, The Vice Guide to Travel. That contained bits like the one after the jump, which is why you want to be watching this show when it hits in April. Source.

Stuff Bulletin: Farscape on Sale; Lucas Says He’s Done; Jones Gets a Park

    Farscape: The Complete Series Blu-Ray

Pop culture can sometimes wait. However, a really great deal sometimes cannot. Thus, we interrupt this lack of interruption with the following headsup: the Amazon deal of the day is the complete series of Farscape. For today only–or until they run out–the Blu-Ray complete series is $68.99, 65% off the regular list price of $199.95. And the DVD complete series is $44.99, 70% off the regular list price of $149.95. And, of course, if you do take advantage of this using our links, we get kickbacks which helps pay for the site. So thanks for that.

    In other news…

  • George Lucas claims to be retiring in the wake of continued outcry against his tampering with Star Wars and the reaction of studios to his upcoming Red Tails. He says in the article, “I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.'” Well, yes, George, but that doesn’t mean people have to like it. And–here’s why I think you’re just smarting from Red Tails more than anything else (we’re two days out from it opening and there’s one review on Rotten Tomatoes?)–you’re going to make money no matter what happens. People are going to go see Phantom Menace in 3D and even if they bitch the whole time they’re still giving you money. George, you are bulletproof. You’ll be back in the saddle before you know it. Episode VII. Mark my words. It’s still happening.

Stuff Bulletin: Criterion Massive Going Out of Print Sale

    Grand Illusion DVD

Okay, a few quick things I wanted to make you aware of so you could get going on them if you choose to.

  • Apparently, The Criterion Collection is losing the license to a crapload of titles. They’re putting them on sale, $5 off each one. Below the jump, at the very end of this post, I’ll give you a full list with links to the Criterion Collection’s store. Snag them while you can. Please note: these aren’t Amazon links, as Criterion is currently giving you the better deal, and I’d rather you got the better deal than me get the kickbacks. However, Amazon has a tendency to beat online sales when they become aware of them, so you might comparison shop before you pull the trigger. Last Criterion sale if Criterion had something on sale for, say 20%, Amazon would go 21%. So just FYI.
  • Also, something that is at Amazon is the complete series of Six Feet Under, which is their deal of the day. It’s 62% off today and while stocks last, so that brings it down from $179.98 to $67.99. So move on that if you so choose.

Stuff: New Export to Nigeria: Sesame Street

There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world of pop culture. But you just want the gist. We got you covered. Read this and then go have a life or something.

  • Amazon‘s killer deal of the day is the complete Seinfeld, for 66% off. That’s $84.99 today only and while stocks last. Snag it here.
  • Sesame Street Nigeria is the working title for exactly what you think it is. Sesame Workshop is working up seventy-eight half-hour shows, backed by a five-year grant from the U.S. federal government. As you might expect, they’re doing what they do best: doing a crapload of studies to figure out how best to get out the show’s messages, which will, sadly and by necessity, have a degree of focus on HIV/AIDS. This will feature Kami, the HIV-positive character from the South African version of Sesame, who along with Big Bird was introduced to Nigeria in a project this year. Source.

Stuff You Need to Know: The Criterion Addendum

Such is my love for you all (and my love of Criterion), that I throw you this link to this sale and there’s no kickbacks involved. The prices are just really, really damn good and you definitely need to know about this. If you or someone you love is thinking of buying Criterion for somebody for Xmas (or even just buying Criterion in general), then run don’t walk to their site, where they’re having a 40% off sale for in-stock items. In stock. That means if it goes out of stock, it’s off the block. Go now because they’re already running out.

And lastly, here’s a quick holiday gift tip about Criterion–and this one, admittedly, has kickbacks associated with it, but I’m telling it to you because it’s just a great trick–The Silence of the Lambs Criterion edition is out of print. And any fan of the film needs it because it has one of the best audio commentaries I’ve ever heard: Hopkins, Foster, director Demme, scribe Tally and the FBI consultant they had on the film. The trick is this: it’s cheap. You can buy it used on Amazon for as low as $6.98. And when you present it and they open it you can say, “Yeah, that’s the out of print version. Features on it you can’t get anywhere else.” And they will be Suitably Impressed. Trust me.
