RIP: Annette Funicello

Annette Funicello

Annette Funicello–Mousketeer Prime and notorious beach partier–has died at age 70. According to the Disney mothership, Annette (because if there was ever a lady who it was okay to call by her first name, it was her) “died peacefully from complications due to multiple sclerosis, a disease she battled for over 25 years.”

You can have any tribute you like. But for us, we would like to think that she has simply jamaica ska’d into the sunset to the great Beach Party in the Sky, like in the video after the jump.

Music Monday: Fishbone, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Hilltop Hoods & More…

Silencio = Muerte: Red Hot + Latin Redux

More music picks for your Monday. If you like what you hear, use the links provided to snag it for yourself from Amazon. Doing so through us gives us kickbacks, and those help pay for stuff like more bandwidth. And also so we can buy more music.

Just note: any prices we quote are accurate as of when this post goes up.

And you know I can’t turn down Fishbone…especially when it’s “new to me” Fishbone. How in the world did they collaborate with Los Fabulosos Cadillacs fifteen years ago for a Red Hot compilation and I missed it? Covering Tom Jones, no less? And yes, I know, we didn’t have crazy internet tracking abilities then–but I still managed to collect a formidable array of Fishbone rarities. So I’m sort of surprised at myself. Regardless, the Redux/reissue version is cheaper and the MP3 of that particular song can be found here. It’s a hoot.

  • Marvel has released a series of Avengers teaser posters. That’s a snippet there with Scarlett as Black Widow. For the whole lot, featuring all the major characters, check out this link.
  • Arrested Development lives. It’s coming back in early 2013 thanks to Netflix. No idea where a rumored feature film is at this point. Dear Netflix: keep some money handy for when AMC gets stupid and decides Walking Dead is too expensive. Just a tip. Source: Variety.

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone – Movie Review

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone

Written & Directed by: Lev Anderson & Chris Metzler

Before we talk about the Fishbone documentary, I need to tell you a little bit about Fishbone and why the band is important to me personally. Because sometimes context is all. I learned about Fishbone from my little brother. He introduced me to them at the same time that I first heard Faith No More and Living Colour, to name a couple. I came on board with The Reality of My Surroundings, which remains my favorite album. So that means my introduction was somewhere in the 1991-1992 timeframe. With Fishbone especially, I was drawn to the mad talent of the band, plus their energy. They sounded like organized chaos incarnate with a horn section. And they had things to say without always having to have Something To Say, if that makes sense.

Fishbone has meant a lot to me ever since. I’ve managed to catch them live three times. The first was at Lollapalooza, the second with them opening for 311 (we were there to see Fishbone) and the most recent time in a relatively small club here in Atlanta. I have followed their progress throughout the years, lost my connection to them with a couple of albums that just didn’t speak to me the same way others have, and found myself rekindled with them, mostly due to the latest show.

13 Days of Xmas – Day 6: Demented Music!

Dr. Demento Presents the Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time cover art

So this post on Senses Working Overtime reminded me just how much Dr. Demento was a part of my growing up. And his Christmas songs were the stuff of legend, especially when you were just a kid and you were tired of hearing all the normal holiday staples. Well, despite the fact he was a no-show when he had committed to stopping by one of our Film Fests so we could present him with a lifetime achievement award for his career and the fact he did so crushed what little I have left for a heart, his contributions to our collective psychosis cannot be denied.

Trouble is this: when you’re trying to put together a day of Demento, there’s very little in the way of videos of the Christmas stuff online. “The Chipmunk Song” we’ve already posted. Bob & Doug‘s “12 Days of Christmas” has no video worth posting, nor does Allan Sherman’s “12 Gifts of Christmas.”

The obvious thing is that, yes, you can find Spike Jones‘ “All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” and Gayla Peevey’s “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” online in decent forms, but they’re only good for one or two listens before they start to annoy the hell out of you. And I guarantee that by December 18th, you’ve heard them both at least twice. So.
