And you know I can't turn down Fishbone...especially when it's "new to me" Fishbone. How in the world did they collaborate with Los Fabulosos Cadillacs fifteen years ago for a Red Hot compilation and I missed it? Covering Tom Jones, no less? And yes, I know, we didn't have crazy internet tracking abilities then--but I still managed to collect a formidable array of Fishbone rarities. So I'm sort of surprised at myself. Regardless, the Redux/reissue version is cheaper and the MP3 of that particular song can be found here. It's a hoot. Categorized as: Music Whenever

First up, a bit of fantastic live Laurie Anderson, "Language is a Virus," based on a fine mindgrope from your friend, Uncle Bill. This is taken from Home of the Brave, but the version Rob was throwing your way was from the four CD set United States Live from 1984. As Rob says, "Not for the faint of heart, an intense project form her early career." Indeed. But sort of retro-futuristic awesome: Categorized as: Music Whenever

In the endless category of "Stuff Widge Somehow Got On His iPod And Has No Memory of How It Got There," we have Young the Giant with "My Body," off their self-titled album, recorded last year in Sacramento. And granted, I'm getting this from Wikipedia (which is always right) but I love the idea that the song originated as a way to break through songwriters' block. Whatever tools you need, man. Well played. And the result is pretty tasty. Categorized as: Music Whenever

So David Byrne and St. Vincent have joined forces for the album Love This Giant as well as a live tour. And that's all well and good that they have material they've put together...well, together. But sorry if I forego all of that in order to bring you this vid from a couple of nights ago in Minneapolis where they collaborate on a cover of "Burning Down the House" that features a massive horn section. And, well, you know what a sucker I am for horns... Categorized as: Music Whenever

The new album from Amanda Palmer and her Grand Theft Orchestra is finally becoming available to the general public this week. I was a Kickstarter backer of her sprawling project and got my physical CD the other day but haven't had a chance to delve as much as I want to yet. I will say this: I never was a fan of the music prior to Theatre is Evil. I can't quite put my finger on what it was but when it was Dresden Dolls or her previous solo stuff--it just didn't work for me. That being said, where the music didn't work the thing I've always respected and been impressed by from jump was her as an artist. She knows how to cultivate a following, she knows how to work a crowd and she knows What the Hell She is Doing. So yeah, like the music or not, you've got to at least give her that. Plus, even before Theatre, I had a quote from her taped up on my monitor. So. With that all being said, with this new album everything I've heard so far I like a lot. The music video for "The Killing Type" just hit and while it's spiffy and all, I'll opt for a live track before a music video. So here's her and her army performing it at the Los Angeles Kickstarter party, right after the break... Categorized as: Music Whenever

We start with the simple live fun of "Neighbors" by Now, Now--this recorded in Birmingham, Alabama last year, apparently. I'm also impressed that anybody can play two instruments at once (not to mention singing), since I can barely sing. So. Enjoy. Categorized as: Music Whenever

He describes them as "If Frank Sinatra sang for The Killers or The Godfathers had a baby with The Stokes." Nice. Here they are with a live version of "Chevy Thunder." Categorized as: Music Whenever

We kick off with Christian Holden from The Hotel Year performing an acoustic solo version of "An Ode to the Nite Ratz Club," a song that Rox can definitely relate to, since it's mostly about breaking and entering. Well, and the foolishness of youth. But mostly crime. (The foolishness of youth should be criminalized anyway, right?) That's showing up after the break... Categorized as: Music Whenever

Okay, it's no secret that I'm a sucker for horns. And one of the songs that's been on massive repeats on Spotify for me has been Deadmau5's "Raise Your Weapon." Put the two together, as the San Francisco band Atlas has done, and you get a respectable bucket of win. Apparently the band's schtick is to cover tracks from the electronic genre with their own style of rock. And that works for me. Categorized as: Music Whenever

Haven't done one of these in a while due to time constraints. Shall we? Why not? Let's open up with Labrinth with Tinie Tempah performing "Earthquake" at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. I've become fixated on Live Lounge of late. Especially the ones in which choirs and string sections are brought in to augment the inherit awesomeness. This might, incidentally, be one of the best choir sections ever. Categorized as: Music Whenever
