Stuff You Need to Know: Clancy, Conan and Shatner All Return (Not All at Once, Though)

Tom Clancy: Dead or Alive
  • Tom Clancy is hitting in December with what sounds like “Crisis on Infinite Clancy,” at least according to the press release: “For the First Time Ever, Tom Clancy Brings Together 26 Years of Unforgettable Characters, including Jack Ryan, Jack Ryan, Jr., John Clark, Ding Chavez, and Mary Pat Foley, to Jointly Face Their Greatest Challenge Yet–Modern-Day Terrorism.” So it’s…Rainbow Seven? No, it’s Dead or Alive and it hits December 7th of this year. His co-author on the book is Grant Blackwood, despite the seemingly 8 point font for Blackwood’s name on the cover. Blackwood has written books based on Clancy’s characters.
  • The UK is getting Mountain Dew. Or at least a variant of it. Not sure why they feel the need to change it, but maybe that’s due (no pun intended) to the fact it’s going to be marketed there as an energy drink. If some enterprising Brit reader would like to send me a sample, I’d be quite grateful. Source.

Stuff: Just Like a Rock Star, Rockstar Is In Bed With Someone Else Now

A lot of things happen. You don’t need to know about them all, and you don’t need to know them in detail. Here, in digest form, is the important pop culture stuff so you can do…whatever else it is you do.

  • Amazon’s deal for the day is the complete Sopranos on DVD. It’s going for $119.99 today only–which is 60% off, it’s normally $300–and while stocks last. You can snag it here.

Also, Lost‘s final season is already available for pre-order, even though it’s not coming out until August. You can snag the DVD here or the Blu-Ray here.

  • The Losers trailer is up. And it looks a bit jokier than I recall the comic being but the idea of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans in those roles is encouraging. And they kept in the “Pow” bit. So I’m already there.

SCIENCE! Sugar vs. High Fructose Corn Syrup Part 2!

Mountain Dew Throwback Round 2 design

So a few months ago I started thinking: all health bits aside, should I be so gung ho about sugar vs. high fructose corn syrup from a taste perspective? I did a blind triangle taste test and surprised myself with the results. One of the things I couldn’t do at the time–since back then there wasn’t any left to be found–was pit Mountain Dew against Mountain Dew Throwback to see if I could taste the difference. But now, Mountain Dew Throwback is finally back and hit Atlanta the other day. So that very night I sat in front of my webcam and tried it out. And here is what happened:

Stuff: Send Some Birthday Love to Uncle Ray

    Ray Bradbury
  • Uncle Ray Bradbury is celebrating his 89th birthday and there’s apparently a party taking place on August 22nd at Mystery and Imagination in Glendale. Sadly, I won’t be able to make the shindig, but here’s the cool bit: the bookstore will pass any birthday cards off to the man himself. So if you owe him some snippets of imagination that he inspired or if he helped shaped your writing (his Zen in the Art of Writing is an invaluable resource), then shoot him a card, why don’t you? I’m sure you can still find a meatspace mailbox somewhere near where you are. Found via.
  • An Alien prequel? Ugh. I know. It just makes your head hurt. But when you tell me that Ridley Scott is attached to direct? Then I’m just…terribly confused. The way you revitalize the franchise is to go backwards? When all you need to do is make an actual Aliens vs. Predator film based on the comic? But later in the article, it’s referred to as a “reboot.” So are people learning the wrong lesson from the latest Star Trek film? No idea. I just know the script hasn’t been written yet and it’s a long, long road between pre-script and hitting the cinema. And Ridley’s a busy guy, as has been discussed before. So I’ll believe this when it starts shooting.

Pepsi Throwback Actually a Step Forward

Pepsi Natural Pepsi Throwback Mountain Dew Throwback

Well, I’m glad somebody is bloody well listening to me. Somewhat. Even though it’s Pepsi and not Coke, although as I mentioned before–Coke waited too long and they got too expensive, so I broke my addiction with them. But anyway, Pepsi is launching three new drinks this month and next: Pepsi Natural, Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback. The trick? They’re all sweetened with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. So…excellent.

Pepsi Natural reminds me of Red Bull Cola. Here’s its story: water, natural sugar, natural caramel extract, natural apple extract and kola nut extract. It hits first in Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas and New York. I’d love to hear an opinion from somebody who grabs one of these.

Diet Mountain Dew Has Surprising Ad

Plenty of surprises here. The fact the vid is amusing enough for me to post, even though it’s for a diet drink–that’s a surprise.

Of course, what they don’t tell you is that the little critter’s innate evil has been amped up by drinking diet soft drinks in first place. I mean, honestly, the guy in the suit is the supplier. Think about it. Surprise!

Mountain Dew to Hit in Aluminum Bottles

Mountain Dew aluminum bottle, designed by Troy Denning

In a first for the U.S., a carbonated soft drink is going to be available in aluminum bottles. That is coming from Mountain Dew, but it’s only in select markets, and only from May to October. Although if they sell like mad, you can expect another round of it, I’m sure. So if you like it, buy it.

Anyway, to draw more attention to this endeavor, they’ve snagged over a dozen artists to make limited edition designs for the bottles. That’s one from Troy Denning you can see there.

We’ve got a full list of the artists after the break, but if you want to see their flashy site that shows all the art and more, check out Green Label Art.

Your Dew Got in My Computer…Your Computer Got in My Dew…Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together!

We have a lot of respect for people who take their love of caffeinated beverages to extreme levels. Hell, in my misspent youth, I drank Sun Drop like mad.

But this is nuttier than anything I would have come up with, so I’m quite impressed. This guy combined a gaming PC and a Mountain Dew soda fountain. Of course, caffeine just makes you generate more pee, so you’re just going to be interrupting your game to get up more often, guy. You still get the points, though.
